a fun book

This is a fun book. It is a satire that takes place in 1964 and involves ex-debutante Maxie Mainwaring exploring career paths while getting caught up in some mob activities. It is full of earnest exclamations, alliteration, and the vocabulary of the time. The sex scenes are mild but are described with humorous analogies pertinent to the time period.

Yes, this is another 5 star review. But this book deserves it. It's a fun, light-hearted (and maybe light-headed) read about the adventures of rogue debutante Maxie Mainwaring and the denizens of the Magdalena Arms women's residence. Maxie is disinherited by her bossy mother and forced to get a jobs. More accurately, she is forced to get a series of jobs which put her on the trail of a dreaded Scandinavian crime syndicate, run by an unexpected 'queenpin.'
'Maxie Mainwaring' has been called a spoof of 50s pulp fiction. Not being an expert on 50s pulp fiction, I can't confirm or deny, but it was a fun read. I see the author has at least one other book on the denizens of the Magdalena Arms and another (Dolly Dingle, Lesbian Landlady) coming out in September. I'll probably give those a try. She also has a book of lesbian horse stories, but I'm not sure about that. I'm not really into horses.

I received a copy of “A Witch's World of Magick” by author Melanie Marquis. I must admit I was very excited! I liked the cover is beautiful and reading the chapter titles intrigued me further. I knew from her book “The Witch's Bag of Tricks” that Melanie Marquis is skilled and adept at what she was writing about.

The author writes in an easy to understand style. She covers extensively subjects and content that I have not seen presented in other book and done so in a fresh manner. Another strength in this book is the extensive footnotes at the bottom of the pages. There are so many metaphysical books available that do not go as deep as I perhaps would like to go in my studies. The footnotes are a wonderful asset to this book for those who would like to pursue deeper and further studies on these wonderful topics.

I also appreciate the different types of magick that she discusses and how to use them. In addition to the history she offers in the introduction I really like the Spells and also the points to ponder at the end of the chapter. I find it very practical and concise. It gives a great opportunity to rethink those things from a different perspective. I found it so informative and learned so much from it. I would highly recommend this book to anyone.

Intermediate Book on witchcraft-Excellent exploration of folklore and folkmagic across the world

The book A witches World of Magick is full of magical practices and concepts from around the world. For this reason the book is aptly titled. Through out the book the reader is exposed to magical cultures from the Meso-American cultures (like the Incas and the Aztecs) to Jewish Folklore, to Hindu Vedas. This book covers global magical practices.

The author of this book did a lot of research into the different folk magic practices and traditions around the world in the creation of this book. The authors dedication to providing a diverse selection of folk magic and folk lore on each topic covered is clear by the wonderful footnotes and credits given throughout the book.

This book is not your basic how to book on witchcraft or magic. If you are looking for a how to write a spell or how magic works book than this book is not for you. This book is focused on and for those in the intermediate area of study. This book is designed to provide experienced practitioners new ways of practicing magic and looking at magical concepts from folk magic practices around the world.

A witches world of Magick is an informative guide to folk magic around the world. By the end of each chapter the reader has covered several different approaches to magical techniques in folk magic traditions that they may have never heard of or explored otherwise. Each chapter while they cover specific magical concepts and techniques covers the magical concepts and techniques from different perspectives in different cultures. In doing this the author provides many different views of magic and different ways to look at magic.

There are ten chapters in this book. Each chapter focuses on a specific type of magical concept or practice. With the common thread or practice for the chapter defined, the author in each chapter provides the reader with a ton of different sets of folklore and folk magic.

The book opens by mentioning how universal the concept of magic is and how wide the varieties of magical practices there are. With in the first chapter it is clear that the book does take a global approach to the practices and magical workings. While the title of the book is "A witches world of magic" not all of the traditions and practices that are discussed are considered witchcraft. The book really only touches on witchcraft at the end of each chapter, providing witches with questions to think about for their magical practices as well as concepts for how the folk magic discussions can be applied into an individuals witchcraft today.

To further illustrate that the book is not a book for beginners the first chapter in the book covers working magic with out the use of tools. The chapter is titled No-Tools Body magic. Its clear right away that the author is showing advanced magical techniques covering the practices of the evil eye, through speech and voice alone, to gestures and movement of the body to make magic effective.

The second chapter covers potion or mixing magic. Once again the author provides a few unusual ways of thinking about potion making and mixing ingredients to make a spell work. From gypsy love potions to a tale about two Polynesian wizards the author covers both conventional and unconventional forms of mixing magic and potions. Again the author ends the chapter with concepts for the practicing witch to ask themselves to further their new magical practices and concepts.

The third chapter discusses container magic. The chapter does not mention Jar spells as found in Hoodoo and other forms of magic but rather other types of containment spells. The concept of talismans and amulets as a container for magical energy is addressed her, but is addressed in a manner related to folk magic concepts. Once again various cultures from Egypt to Nigeria and even the PowWow tradition of the Pennsylvania Dutch magical practices related to containing forces and power are discussed in that chapter.

The fourth chapter is all about knot magic and binding magic. The spells covered here include a well known folk charm by sailors to create wind while at seas. Other knot magic and binding spells cover love and protection. From Gypsy magic to the sacred knots of the girdle worn by Zoroastrrians binding and knot based folk magic can be found in that chapter.

The fifth chapter is all about puncture magic. Yes the concept of voodoo dolls or dolls punctured to create a magical effect is covered here. However the dolls are only one of many different magical practices discussed here in this chapter. Not all piercing magic is baneful or curse like. The chapter covers a few examples of healing magic through punctures.

The sixth chapter is all about identification. In magic it is important to have a clear target or concept in mind when working a spell. If you are doing a distance healing for someone its important to know their name or have some way to connect the energetic forces to them. This chapter covers many different ways that a person can identify the target of their spell. From actual names to using body parts the folk magic in this chapter shows how identification of the target is essential.

The seventh chapter is actually related to the previous chapter. This chapter covers decoy magic. Here the magical practices include the well known witches jar, as well as using rocks or stones to distract a spirit. From using masks and loud noises to making an actual representation of the original target as a decoy, decoy and distraction magic is covered here.

The eighth chapter is about curse breaking. The author is clear in the beginning of the chapter that the two most common forms of magic practiced are those of healing magic and those of protection and curse breaking. The various mentioned include using parts of the body (hair, spit, etc) of the curser to remove the curse, destroying the artifacts, and sending back curses. From a modern American curse (the curse of the Bambino) to the Evil eye methods of curse breaking come in as many different forms as there are cultures in the world.

The ninth chapter is about masks and mimic magic. In shamanic cultures shape shifting is often involved in getting to know an animal spirit and to work with the animal spirit. This is just one form of mimic and mask magic involved. Other techniques include jumping high in the fields to show how the crops should grow. The idea is that by showing the fields how to grow they will and that by becoming the animal or spirit, that animal or spirit will manifest there and lend its power to the working at hand.

The final chapter discusses and mentions group magic and ritual. Group magic and ritual was common once but not so any more. From the ancient rituals of those who follow Dionysus to mentions of our modern day Pagan Pride day celebrations, the author covers why group magic is essential and why it should be considered a practice.

By the end of the book the author has given multiple cultural practices that a witch can integrate into their own practices and take inspiration from. The goal of this book is to inspire the witch to look at folklore and folk magic and find new ways of adding to their magical practices. This book is just what the intermediate witch needs to take their magic to the next level using only folklore and traditional practices.

While the book promises information from diverse cultures and provides that information, it's more of a kind of general purpose book. The writer assumes that you are an adept, experienced witch, and makes comments like, "So just take you enhancing herbs and swirl them around the mirror" or stuff like that. If you are a new, inexperienced witch or a self-studied person, this book is probably not very useful to you.

Here's a small excerpt of what I'm talking about: "At the center, make a single dot with your fingertip—this is the portal your ghost will enter. If you like, use a spirit-attracting herb or oil to trace the spiral and dot. Envision the spirit being inescapably drawn into the mirror. Invite it to enter with complimentary words acknowledging the ghost’s greatness—in other words, sweet talk it!" This is probably not something you'd say to a novice.

Simplifying Lacan

Like many, I have struggled with Lacan's "own" words in English translation, sensing ideas of importance that are lost because a) Lacan intentionally obfuscated his ideas to make the very points he wrote about, b) French linguistic play doesn't translate into English, & c) translators vary in quality, in part depending on their audience (e.g., cultural studies, which often misconstrues Lacan as a postmodernist). This book is a wonderful introduction, although I suspect it is of greatest value to someone like myself who has already attempted to fathom Schema L with frustration.
For the beginner, I suggest making a try at Lacan himself especially the Seminars, for example, Seminar XI: The Four Fundamental Concepts of Psychoanalysis. After enduring one or two of these, come to this book, and then return to Lacan, who should now seem much more illuminating and witty. You may even understand why Lacan seemed so frustrating to you, which goes to his essential points about what language does for the sense of self.
Another strategy is to read any number of works by Slavoj Zizek (for example, Looking Awry, Everything You Always Wanted to Know about Hitchcock), who can slice and dice popular culture in a fun way, all the while with a very lucid understanding of Lacan's ideas. It helps to have one or two videos of Hitchcock handy as you do so.

extremely well written introduction

When you need an introduction to Lacan, buy this and forget the rest. This book has at least three merits. First, the author is an orthodox lacanian psychoanalyst. This advantage could not be overstated. So many books titled so-called "Introduction to Lacan" are written by non-professional (e.g. professors of French, Cultural Studies or literary critic) with some dubious leanings and irredeemable confusions. Those books are rather personal accounts than good introductions for beginner and of no use to understand one of the most difficult writers of all time. Darian Leader's book is different. This book was written by lacanian professional rather than self-appointed "interpreter" of Lacan and supervised by Jacques-Alain Miller, the successor of Lacan. This fact makes the book the most faithful and reliable introduction to Lacan. Second, this book explains the clinical significance and origin of great Lacanian terms, e.g. repetition, sinthome, lalangue, so on. The result is that the approach makes it easy to understand. This is why other books by non-psychiatrist could be by no means competitors. Third, this book is written by exceptionally clear language and aided by intelligent graphics. Clearity is not a Lacanian virtue, but this book makes a immensely satisfying exception.

For simplicity, the best intro

I'm puzzled at the other reviews; this really is the best place to start with Lacan. It is the Third intro to him I've read. The first was Zizek, which was very interesting, but he explains Lacan in more cultural terms, as Lacan relates to popular culture. Then I read Sean Homer's book, and I was a bit disappointed, in trying to simplify he left me feeling like I hadn't gotten enough info to understand really what Lacan meant with certain terms. This book I loved. Yes, it is simple, but extremely clear. Many of the terms I had previously read about `clicked' with me the way they were presented in this book. Usually I don't write reviews, I would never have bought this, it was given to me, but I am so glad I read it. InsectDesires.com Psychodynamic art.

Review
I'd written once before, just a little, on De Laurence and his influential Great Book of Magical Art and Hindu Magic (aka The Obeah Bible.) It's interesting to see early uses of common hoodoo ingredients, like when I found 17th century references to lodestone and swallow's heart love spells in Wecker. De Laurence -- plagiarizing from The Magus, which was itself plagiarizing from earlier sources -- brings up the first mention I've seen of black cat and black dog hair for a breakup spell, in the following:

"...for divorce and separation of the man from the woman, make a seal of red copper, being the image of a dog biting his tail; and then perfume it [id est, smoke it in an incense] with the hair of a black dog and a black cat."

Interestingly, some of these "seals" that De Laurence/Barret describes in the Great Book, I've seen described elsewhere as being more like poppets or voodoo dolls (in this case, a copper state of a dog biting its tail.) I'm unsure which method is more correct; though for this case it's probably easier to engrave a copper seal than to cast a statue.

Additionally, it is mentioned elsewhere in the book that one should write out (for that particular spell above) the symbols and names of the spirits of the moon, which it includes on graphs elsewhere.

De Laurence and his books were so influential that in some regions, casting a magic spell on a person is called 'De Laurencing.' In fact, the association with Obeah and Voodoo practice has fixed it so that to this day, De Laurence's books are banned in Jamaica.

Despite a negative review left for the facsimile edition of the Great Book (note that I prefer the Obeah Bible printing, because it was actually retyped and some of the images redrawn for better clarity), the book actually is more than just a ripoff reprinting of The Magus. Somewhere around halfway in, Book Two of "Hindoo Magic" (which unlike part one does occasionally have something legitimate to do with Hindu practices, like its section on yoga, prana and breathing techniques) does appear to be legitimately written by De Laurence. He gives tons of magic spells using some kind of Temple Incense that he used to sell (Rev. Jim at COGL tells me it was made from patchouli and sandalwood) -- henbane and Temple incense produces visions of apparitions, sulfur and Temple Incense drives away evil spirits, burning Temple Incense every Tuesday in your rooms keeps you holy and powerful, so on and so on.

It's got lots of other things that were probably new information at the time (or at least the first widely distributed printing) like guides to color therapy and use of colors in magic, a guide to how to tell if your dreams are ominous or not, and the said breathing methods, a lot of which is a part of modern magical practices. Sometimes things said by Hyatt's informants make more sense in light of reading De Laurence's book.

While the writing can be a little dull -- since it's quite old-fashioned -- it's definitely a worthwhile thing to check out if you're interested in "old style conjure" or voodoo. --The Spellcaster's Source, December 30, 2010

The Obeah Bible was originally published as The Great Book of Magical Art, Hindu Magic and East Indian Occultism in 1898 by L.W. De Laurence. This text is taken from the 1915 edition.

Despite the title, the text has little to do with Hinduism -- many of the "Hindu" words were fabricated and pasted into the text, of which much is an adapted version of Francis Barrett's 1801 occult work The Magus (which was itself a compilation of earlier European occult works, including those by Cornelius Agrippa and Pietro d'Abano.)

The Great Book became an influential text in the practice of certain African-derived magic systems, including Hoodoo, Voodoo and Obeah. Some have even gone so far as to call Obeah "a form of magic based on a mail-order catalogue" (referring to De Laurence's primary sales technique.)

The Great Book, along with all other books published by the De Laurence Company, remained banned in Jamaica due to strong associations with Obeah practice. This has earned The Great Book its nickname The Obeah Bible.

In this edition, original spelling has generally been preserved, and corrections have been made to the text only in cases of obvious error. Most footnotes have been retained except for those which directed the reader to purchase goods and services which are no longer available. There have been minimal additions. Several of the illustrations have been re-drawn or scanned from original sources in order to achieve utmost clarity.

L. W. de Laurence (full name Lauron William de Laurence) was an American author and publisher on occult and spiritual topics. He was born in 1868 and died on 11 September 1936 in Chicago, Illinois, USA at the age of 68. His publishing company (De Laurence, Scott & Co.) and spiritual supply mail order house was located in Chicago, Illinois. Although he is mocked and reviled among modern occultists for his plagiarism (or, more properly, book-pirating) of the Pictorial Key to the Tarot by Arthur Edward Waite, he also wrote his own works, including The Master Key, and The Great Book of Hindu Magic. In addition, he is believed to have co-written some books with his fellow Chicago resident, the prolific New Thought and yoga author William Walker Atkinson. De Laurence was a pioneer in the business of supplying magical and occult goods by mail order, and his distribution of public domain books, such as Secrets of the Psalms by Godfrey Selig and Pow Wows or the Long-Lost Friend by John George Hohman had a great and lasting effect on the African American urban hoodoo community in the southern United States as well as on the development of Obeah in Jamaica. In early 1930 he was consecrated a bishop by the Spiritualist Arthur Edward Leighton (1890 to 1963), a bishop of the American Catholic Church (a church body founded by Joseph Ren� Vilatte). One surprising result of de Laurence's consecration was that it helped influence the move of some black spiritualist churches towards a more traditional view of Christianity and in the year of his death, 1936, he may have consecrated the first bishops for these churches, e.g. Thomas B Watson (1898 to 1985) of New Orleans.

A good reference book but that's it.

I think this will be my last occult book of the purchase, they all contain the same patriarchal posturing. being born and raised in Jamaica I too heard of the "legendary De Laurence" the first part of the book was filled with such patriarchal religious dogma if you can get past that with the eye rolling which will surely be many and a few strained eye muscles, then you get into the stuff you can actually use. at page 312 the book finally became interesting. I will say any serious occultist can use this book as it really does contain some serious information, but by no mean's is it the holy grail.

I would just like to take a minute and really stress true spirituality belongs to the divine feminine and ever since matriarchal societies where overthrown by patriarchy beginning with the reengage priest of Amun Ra, who overthrew the priestesses of Auset/Isis and stole their oracles, since that time every man and his cronies have sought to supplant himself in her mysteries and have mired it down in esoteric patriarchal drivel devoid, of any real spiritual knowledge or power and created outright lies and misrepresentations of her sacred oracles, for those who truly seek the divine wisdom and keys to the spiritual temple, will be guided by her to reveal her truths to the sincere seeker. as a practitioner of Obeah.

I found very little obeah in this book and while some of it is used in obeah, this by no means is an obeah bible. Mr De Laurence has reputation in Jamaica as a fearsome obeah man and I have to wonder while he did possess some serious occult knowledge, how much of "his illustrious reputation" is actually based on hard- core facts and not plain spook ism. if your looking for a book with some Obeah rituals try Santeria Formulary and spell book by Carlos Montenegro and Palo Mayombe: The Garden of Blood and Bones by Nicholaj De Mattos. these two books contain actual obeah rituals. while they do not contain info on the actual path, they do contain a lot the rituals we use in obeah.

About the Author

Mary Beth Chrissis is a senior member of the technical staff at the Software Engineering Institute (SEI). Since joining the SEI in 1988, Chrissis has been a coauthor of the Capability Maturity Model Integration for Development (CMMI-DEV) and Capability Maturity Model for Software (SW-CMM) models. Currently, Chrissis chairs the CMMI Configuration Control Board (CCB), is a member of the IEEE Software and Systems Engineering Standards Executive Committee, and is an instructor of various CMMI model-related courses at the SEI. Prior to joining the SEI, Chrissis worked at GTE Government Systems in Rockville, Maryland; Dravo Automation Sciences in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; and Sperry Corporation in Great Neck, New York. Before coming to the SEI, Chrissis was pursuing her M.S. in computer science from Johns Hopkins University, and in 1983 she received a B.S. from Carnegie Mellon University.

Prior to joining the SEI,�Konrad worked with several companies in computer science-related positions, including ISSI, SAIC, and Honeywell and briefly with George Mason University and the University of Maryland. He obtained his Ph.D. in mathematics in 1978 from Ohio University, Athens, Ohio.

Sandy Shrum is a senior writer/editor and communications point of contact for the Software Engineering Process Management program at the Software Engineering Institute (SEI). Besides this book, she has coauthored two other CMMI books: CMMI�-ACQ: Guidelines for Improving the Acquisition of Products and Services (Addison-Wesley, 2009) and CMM� for Services: Guidelines for Superior Service, Second Edition (Addison-Wesley, 2007). She has been with the SEI since 1995 and has been a member of the CMMI Development Team since the CMMI project’s inception in 1998. Her roles on the project have included model author, small review team member, reviewer, editor, model development process coordinator, and quality assurance process owner. Before joining the SEI, Sandy worked for eight years with Legent Corporation, a Virginia-based software company. Her experience as a technical communicator dates back to 1988, when she earned her M.S. in professional writing from Carnegie Mellon University. Her undergraduate degree, a B.S. in business administration, was earned at Gannon University, Erie, Pennsylvania.

Exactly what it needs to be.

This book is outstanding for anyone who is looking for a model to assist their company processes. I have read this book forwards and backwards leading into our CMMI appraisal and without the help of the book, we would not have styled our processes and procedures correctly to achieve our CMMI ML3 objectives. Process Improvement at its Best

CMMI (Capability Maturity Model Integration) models are the product of the industry's best coming together to build a collection of best practices that help organizations to improve their processes.

The version 1.3 core framework now supports CMMI for Services, CMMI for Development, and CMMI for Acquisition. This book covers CMMI for Development.

It begins with an introduction to process improvement, the CMMI history, the CMMI framework, and CMMI for development.

It then has several chapters that go into detail explaining the ins and outs of the CMMI framework. Topics covered include Core Process Areas and CMMI Models, Understanding Levels, Structures of the Continuous and Staged Representations, Understanding Capability Levels and Maturity Levels, Process Areas, Achieving High Maturity, Recursion and Iteration of Engineering Processes, Adopting CMMI, and SCAMPI Appraisal Methods.

My favorite chapter in this section is Chapter 4: Relationship Among Process Areas. It has great diagrams that show the relationships between the process areas. It really helps to give them context.

Part one ends with Essays and Case Studies. It has 5 essays and 3 case studies. My favorite essay is Ten Missing Links to CMMI Success. Some of the other are Avoiding Typical Process Improvement Pitfalls, Hiring a CMMI Consultant or Lead Appraiser, and From Doubter to Believer: My Journey to CMMI.

The book then continues with a detailed overview of the Generic Goals and Generic Practices which is followed by a chapter on each of the Process Areas in the CMMI for Development. Each chapter about a process area gives in-depth coverage. They include the purpose, introductory notes, related process areas, and specific practices by goals which include example work products.

The book ends with a few appendix - References, Acronyms, CMMI Version 1.3 Project Participants, and a really nice Glossary.

One of the things I like about the book is the Perspectives. They are little sidebars that include insight from the creators and industry experts. Some of them are pretty interesting like the one about how the name constellation started being used.

There are also tons of tips, hints, and x-refs in the sidebars throughout the process areas part of the book. Tips and hints where similar in that they provided additional information about the topic at hand. The x-ref boxes include cross reference material. Sometimes the cross references where in the book and sometimes they are external.

The book is the cr�me de la cr�me of the CMMI resources. This material comes straight from the experts. I have been involved in a lot of process improvement initiatives. Not all of the CMMI initiatives, which is a shame. I can tell you that if I had my choice, the wisdom found in this book would be applied to all the projects I go to.

All in all, if you are involved with process improvement, you own it to yourself to get this book. If you are involved with CMMI for development at all, you MUST get this book.

Add some more comments and suggestions on the original version. This book is too heavy, paper quality is not good enough for frequent reference.

Not worth it..........

I decided to buy this book instead of the other book by Light and now I realize it was not the right decision.

This book has various drawbacks which I've found after reading 5 chapters.

- Its badly written especially the grammar,I understand many authors are from non english speaking countries but don't they edit these chapters?
- somewhere its mentioned the authors were not paid for writing the chapters and this may have got something to do with the final book
- apart from a few chapters most of the information in this book can be found in murray and nadel and uptodate.
- Its by no means exhaustive and is a poor source of reference for pleural diseases.
- for eg I was looking for information on rickettsial lung/pleural diseases and I found more info on Harrison's then in this book.

Big Disappointment and a waste of 180$.Unfortunately by the time I realized this book is not worth it, it was already past 30 days and so am stuck with it for ever.....

Very impressive book.
the only problem as I see it: A lot of the stuff inside has already been distilled and given to us( residents and fellows) in small doses. So you already know a sizable portion of the work.
Another guru I regard highly, for pleural disease is Steven Sahn from MUSC.

It would be best to have a mentor, even though there are a lot of safety and precaution guides.
