If you're an interface dummy like me, this is a good read.
By Chris R.
I'm a full-time software engineer/consultant who couldn't interface design his way out of the proverbial wet paper bag.

This book didn't really change that.

What it did do, however, is get me to start recognizing the things that make a bad UI/UX to the point where I could, and this is important, properly quantify what was wrong. I could explain the details I was looking at in relevant terms instead of having to rely on things like "feels wrong" or "just isn't right."

If you're a bit of an interface dummy like me... yea, pick it up and you won't be sorry.

Definitive interaction design bible
By Scott
This book serves two purposes:

1. It's a great intro to interaction design and UX in general

2. It's a handy reference for when specific design questions come up and you need to remember what the best practice is for a certain type of interface element.

I'm a UX Designer with several years experience, and I still can't get enough of this book. Cooper knows his stuff (of course; he goes way back with software and he's the head of one of the big UX consultancies) and lays it out simply and logically. If you do any kind of software design, read this and remember it. If you're a designer, keep it on hand.

great even for programmers with no design experience
By Chad Mills
I really learned a lot from this book. I can't think of any reason to give it less than 5 stars.

It's a great overview of a field I'm not particularly familiar with, so I can't comment about the choice of topics. However, what is covered is covered rather effectively. There are wonderful examples throughout to concretize the principles illustrated.

The author has a clear perspective on what good and bad design is, and it was very tastefully done. It doesn't come across as derogatory even when criticizing a particular approach or product. It's always a learning experience to read through an example you're already familiar with.

This book helped me to see design as a sort of science with many useful principles. It won't make me good at design per se, but there was enough practical suggestions that it'll greatly improve the apps I write for fun. And the theory also serves as a good context for the practical advice. They're connected very well, with a good mix of each.

"Dre Baldwin has focused harder on basketball than you’ve ever worked on anything in your life and here he is laying all his cards on the table for you. " - Miles Wray

"The mental is to the physical as three is to one.” - Napoleon Bonaparte

The mental game is everything. How you approach you life mentally — your attitude — will have more impact on your success than your physical tools and abilities. In life, there are many people on both sides of the achievement spectrum: Those who perform well above their means, and those who achieve well below what their “tools” would suggest. How each of these people approaches the game of life, mentally, is the reason for each success or failure.

What I am going to do with this Mental Handbook, is touch on all the issues that our minds combat in any competitive space, which is pretty much all of life, every day. From family doubting your ambitions, to choking on the big stage, to feelings of fear, to obtaining and maintaining confidence, to trash talk, and everything in between.

From the Author
You may know me already from my YouTube videos or website, but if not this is a great place to begin. My background is of a professional basketball player who came to be known for the workout videos I consistently (read: Every Single Day) uploaded to YouTube starting in 2006 and am still doing today -- though I have added the topics of Motivation, Confidence, Marketing, Branding, and Entrepreneurship to the mix.Through the comments I received on my video content, I found my fans were interested in hearing my philosophies on sports, goals and life in general and began posting Weekly Motivational messages. The segued into my love of reading and in turn, writing, and here we are.In addition to sharing stories from my own experiences, I go into motivational/psychological/philosophical content because I hear very clearly from my readers and viewers that there is a need for it. I have appointed myself to fill that need. As with my YouTube videos (over 4,500 and counting as of December 2015), I do not see a limit as to how much content I can publish; I'm just racing life's clock to share as much of me as I can. I can only hope you enjoy and find some of it interesting.

Excellent Ideas on The Mental Game.
By N. Johansen
I do not play basketball. I do not know how I found Dre's videos on YouTube originally, but that doesn't really matter. This is a man who has lived his craft, sweated for it. My medium - words - is different, but the sentiment remains the same: approach your work with intensity and dedication, and you will see reward. Every word within the pages of THE MENTAL HANDBOOK is backed up by his own example.

This is powerful, and it is rare in the realm of motivational texts. It allows you to buy-in and apply these philosophies to your own life - whether that be on the court or in your business.

The ideas get five stars. They're simple and don't mince words. This is merely what needs to happen to get work done and see results. The presentation is a bit sloppy, though - and while it pains me to subtract a star, the ideas within deserve finer attention to detail. The proofreading mistakes don't ruin the book, but they do jar you out of the fabled "zone" that THE MENTAL HANDBOOK explores and examines. And that's a shame.

Still highly recommended, and I'll read Dre's next book - as I've done with his previous two - as soon as it's available.

Smart
By Coustmer
The book isn't going to up your mental game by just skimming and reading you have to just pick it piece for piece and understand what you just read. Sit down and see what your not doing right and make the adjustment. Once you do all of that, the results are endless.

Just what I needed
By A Customer
I've been following Dre for a few years now when I started watching his basketball videos on YouTube because I didn't want to be the worst player in every pick up game I played and they helped so much! Since then his motivational and self help videos have also played a huge part in my development as a person. Something the way Dre communicates and his choice of words speak to me in a way I can really understand and use in real life. This book is just another example, to anyone chasing there dreams and want to succeed at it, whatever it may be, this Mental Handbook is a great source of inspiration and wisdom.

The Complete Short Stories of H.G. Wells, by H. G. Wells

Herbert George Wells was perhaps best known as the author of such classic works of science fiction as The Time Machine and War of the Worlds. But it was in his short stories, written when he was a young man embarking on a literary career, that he first explored the enormous potential of the scientific discoveries of the day. He described his stories as "a miscellany of inventions," yet his enthusiasm for science was tempered by an awareness of its horrifying destructive powers and the threat it could pose to the human race. A consummate storyteller, he made fantastic creatures and machines entirely believable, and by placing ordinary men and women in extraordinary situations, he explored, with humor, what it means to be alive in a century of rapid scientific progress. At the dawn of a new millennium, Wells' singular vision is more compelling than ever.

About the Author
HG Wells was born in Bromley, Kent in 1866. After working as a draper's apprentice and pupil-teacher, he won a scholarship to the Normal School of Science in 1884, studying under T H Huxley. He was awarded a first-class honours degree in biology and resumed teaching but had to retire after a kick from an ill-natured pupil afflicted his kidneys. He worked in poverty in London as a crammer while experimenting in journalism and stories. It was with The Time Machine (1895) that he had his real breakthrough.

the writing is fantastic and the ideas ahead of their time
By Steven Brewer
This is an older compilation of HG Wells' short stories. Though the stories are old, the writing is fantastic and the ideas ahead of their time. Some stories are sci-fi, some fantasy, some nostalgic, many are like episodes of the Twilight Zone, and most have some moral or message to them. I highly recommend this book.

Short Stories by Wells
By Josiah Luke Spencer
Most people know H.G. Wells as the author of classic Sci-fi stories like "War of the Worlds" and "The Invisible Man." In addition to his many classic works, Wells was a prolific author of short stories. While some of them are unexciting, many of them are simply genius. He mixes adventure, humor, and sci-fi in these unusual and odd-ball stories. Any fan of unique short stories will enjoy this collection.

H.G. Wells as you've never known him
By Norman's friend (Los Angeles, CA)
First off, this collection does not contain The Time Machine, I'm not sure what collection the other reviewer was referring to. However, this collection does contain some of the best stories you will ever read.

I discovered H.G. Wells relatively late in life (within this past year, at the age of 33) when I stumbled on a discount copy of "The Island of Dr. Moreau." Like most people, I'd read "War of the Worlds" in high school and thought it pretty good. However, I believe to truly appreciate Wells one must be older. Old enough to have experienced some sort of life and to appreciate fine, clean writing.

After reading "The Island of Dr. Moreau" I was surprised at how current the story felt and how horrific some of the details were (it definitely didn't read or feel like a book written over 100 years ago). As a result, each time I stopped at a used book store I'd peruse the shelves looking for anything Wells. I stumbled on a collection of five of his short stories called "The Empire of the Ants." What? Wells wrote short stories? No way! I bought the book and read it over my vacation. I was amazed. Wells is known for writing in detail, but I'd say his writing is even more detailed in his short stories (possibly because in a short story you don't have to worry about bogging the reader down in too much detail- causing them to lose the thread of the story).

What Wells does, and what he's famous for, is writing in such detail that a scenario becomes supremely believable, then, he adds a touch of the fantastic to really knock the reader's socks off. Since he's already created this ultra-realistic world, the fantastic becomes believable and the reader is left thinking, "that could really happen, couldn't it?"

After reading that collection of shorts, I looked for something more comprehensive and found "The Complete Short Stories of H.G. Wells" edited by John Hammond. I was amazed again! The breadth and scope of Wells' stories is amazing: from a rogue plant with a taste for human blood, to a voodoo shaman out for revenge, to an upstart student with a conscious, Wells' imagination knows no bounds.

I'm about half way through the book and my favorite stories thus far are "The Flowering of the Strange Orchid," "Pollock and the Porroh Man" and "In the Modern Vein: An Unsympathetic Love Story" (the stories I decribed above) also "The Lord of the Dynamos," "The Sea Raiders" and "A Story of the Stone Age." I must also add that I read "The Country of the Blind" as part of the previous book containing Wells' stories and it too is amazing. Also, I admit that sometimes Wells delves into too much detail, which can frustrate the reader and slow the story down. However, of the 30-40 stories I've read thus far, it has only happened a handful of times.

I only wish that this collection contained a short critique before each story. Mr. Hammond is a renowned Wells scholar and has even written a book analyzing Wells' short stories (a book I can't locate, by the way), that book I believe is essential to really understanding these stories (namely due to Wells' tendency to critique society in his writing). Unfortunately, no real analysis is available in this compilation, thus, the reader is left to his own interpretation. For the most part, the stories are pretty self-explanatory, but it would be nice to understand some of the other meanings.

In conclusion, I give this collection 5 stars and I highly recommend it for anyone with a taste for great storytelling. Wells' writing is fantastic, touching, humorous, detailed and very sensitive- I think you'll be surprised at how he'll win you over. H.G. Wells is a master writer, and he's gained me as a fan for life! :)

From Publishers Weekly
These 44 short essays generally proceed as meditations from Deen's home garden in New York's Catskills mountains. Those that stick close to the daylilies and tomato plants may lose the ungreen-thumbed reader, but others venture to the ridge, the neighbors and the local fauna. These latter display Deen's discerning eye and ear for setting a scene (the veery "whistling down a rain barrel") and creating sometimes iconic character sketches. Most essays are ambitious musings that begin with something green and spiral out metaphorically to things cultural. At times, Deen riffs off her connections too hurriedly and esoterically, leaving a reader with a salad of images and literary references that obscure the main point. The best, including the last five essays, follow a well-marked path, have a strong anchoring metaphor or draw emotional power from personal history, as in "Lens," which uses a pair of 1920s eyeglasses that belonged to Deen's mother to examine the mother-daughter bond. The closing essay, "Theory of Descant," leaves all the others behind in its depth and reach. A picture of a heartbreaking scene in Rwanda is described not once but three times, around a moving discourse of what words can do, what is "unsayable" and how the effort of writing corresponds to the counterpoint of 14th-century polyphony. Deen is poetry editor of Commonweal and, in her best pieces, she ably translates her ear for poetry into a lyric prose.

From Library Journal
A lover of language and writing, Deen, the poetry editor of Commonweal and coauthor of The Common Sense (Boynton Cook, 1985), which concern innovation in writing instruction, arranges these essays into seven years, or sections, loosely focused on her experiences living in an old house in the Catskills, New York, region. She does not discuss gardening so much as complex metaphoric structures and literary allusions that bring deeper meaning to day lilies, herbs, and other nature-oriented subjects. Especially intriguing is her unique way of connecting nature and culture, e.g., she associates the garden maze with learning and then moves on to the cathedral at Chartres. Although Deen's metaphoric leaps are occasionally difficult to follow, her essays present delightful anecdotes, often about the unruly weeds, frogs, snakes, toads, and other creatures that make their way into her garden, sending the reader in unexpected directions. Recommended for thoughtful readers who love nature.

An Authoress blooms
By A Customer
Rosemary Deen (co-author of 2 composition texts with the National Book Critics Circle Award for Poetry prize winner Marie Ponsot) has now published her own book of lyric yet poetic non-fiction essays "Naming the Light A Week of Years". Naming the Light is about places and people, books and music and travel, gardening and astronomy. Some essays examine Rosemary's Deen's experience finding herself well placed, at home in an old house in the New York's Catskill region. Others travel out to remote worlds, then bring them next door through the author's power of imagination. Mrs. Deen see human experience as part of a system alive with continuity between nature and culture-its worms and its catherdrals, its weather and its cantatas-all one, like a giant plant or a richly woven tapestry. In prose elegant and deep as poetry, she explores how we want to be named, and how we want to name as a way of trying to be true, how light in which we see governs our seeing, how history is always present, how language survives translation, how women behave, and men, and what it might mean to be nigh or near someone-to be a neighbor, what tools (language or spades) mean to work, how roots balance us, and how what gardens really grow are metaphors for human life.
Naming the Light will find a welcome place on the shelf of garden literature...Anyone who enjoys natural history of any kind would enjoy this book -Mary Swander, coauthor of "Parsnips in the Snow: Interviews with Midwestern Gardeners".

outstanding
By Kenneth R. Evans
I am a PSIA certified instructor with 14 years of teaching skiing at a major Utah ski resort. This book is the finest resource I have seen. It has influenced the way I think about skiing and the way I teach my guests. I have purchased additional copies as gifts to other instructors. Many others in our ski school have copies. We had the opportunity to haer Ron LeMaster lecture for 2 hours on the concepts in his book about 3 months ago. The concepts he shared in his lecture and in the book are stll being discussed by us at our lineup or on the chairlift. If you want to better understand skiing buy this book, read and then re-read it. I will be studying it for years to come.

Great reference source
By Robert Ting Kwok Ho
On the whole I think there are some really great information in this book. I really liked the chapters on stance and alignment; Up and Down and Lateral Balance which cleared up a lot of my confusion on the role of the inside and outside ski. My only criticism are some of the overly technical bits in the early chapters which I found difficult to understand and also the bias towards racing and not all mountain skiing which most of us are. For example, I would have liked more comments on the use of the inside ski in moguls and powder.
A very rich reference source though.

A superb technical book w gorgeous color ipad photos
By Amazon Customer
I really liked this book. The author speaks from decades of experience, competently discusses the details of the angles and forces involved in skiing, explains many common skiing faults and how to fix them, describes quite a few exercises to help you improve your technique, and includes many stunning color montages of skiers to back up his points.

I read the Kindle version on my color iPad mini, and absolutely loved zooming in on the beautiful color montages to see the fine points. My guess is that reading it on a color iPad is a better experience than reading a physical book.

I had a few minor quibbles about how the author presented the vector components of gravity as it acted on the center of mass of the skier, probably because of all those force diagrams that I had to draw in university physics class. But since I imagine the average reader will quickly skip over the details of such force diagrams, I don't think any real harm was done. I just think there were better, more technically accurate ways of presenting the forces in some of the diagrams.

I also thought the Kindle version would have been better if hyperlinks had been provided for the various picture and figure references that referred to various places in the book. I ended up using the Kindle search facility to search for the referenced figure number in lieu of a more convenient hyperlink, which worked almost as well.

Overall, I thought this was a superb piece of work, written by an author who has an obvious deep knowledge and love of the sport. I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in learning more about skiing. I think this book will become a classic in the field, if it is not already.

It's A Vet's Life (The Original Bestselling Vet Series Book 1), by Alex Duncan

'Animal in every sense of the word: it is easily the most original animal book I have read, and quite the funniest in years... The fast and furious pace never conceals a hard core of veterinary experience.' --The Countryman

It's A Vet's Life' is the first in an 8-book series based on the hilarious life of vet Michael Morton and the animals and owners in his care. Michael’s uncle Simon has taken a sabbatical from his Knightsbridge practice to go on Safari, leaving his newly qualified nephew in charge, with the promise of a partnership if he can introduce six regular new clients before his return.

This is London, 1961: The Cold War is raging; the class system is crumbling; teenagers have money in their pockets for the first time. And the animal problems that Michael encounters seem rooted in those of their owners as they adjust to the changing times. But when Michael finds romance with the strikingly attractive Julia Hanley, and debutante Claire Brown-Claremont steps in with her colour co-ordinated Siamese cats, it is anybody s guess whether, for all his humanity and humour, Uncle Simon’s challenge will be met in time.

'Lots of laughs and lots of fascinating animal revelations (and a few human ones too).'-- She Magazine

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Alex Duncan is the pseudonym for a prolific writer, whom the New York Times described as 'one of the really great comedy writers of England'. Readers of Cathy Woodman and Marc Abraham will also warm to Alex Duncan.

Entertaning take on veterinary science
By Posh Girl
Okay, this is not the quaint country life of James Herriot's books. This is definitely the rip roaring adventures of a bachelor veterinarian, looking for a partnership in his uncle's practice and for the love of his life.
The animal stories are great, especially the snake in an auditorium that is full of people.
Hilarious in its own right. Do not expect another James Herriot from this book. Recommended for animal lovers who like a bit of humour.

Hip, 60s, British Vet
By heidi
This is a wonderful read (on tape). The narrator is a young, 60s, London veterinarian taking care of everything from racehorses to jealous female cobras. After you listen this long, it feels as if the characters are all neighbors and you miss them!
It's an interesting sort of a relic; not a James Herriott by any means, but intriguing nevertheless.

Love it and finish reading it in one breath
By olesya v moroz
Love it and finish reading it in one breath. I am familiar with James Herriot and after reading his autobiography that was written by his son Jim, stumbled on this author and was quiet happy with it. Would read it again and again.
