About the Author
Dr John Gribbin trained as an astrophysicist at the University of Cambridge before becoming a full-time science writer. He has worked for the science journal Nature, and the magazine New Scientist and has contributed articles on science topics to The Times, the Guardian and the Independent, and has made several acclaimed science series for BBC Radio 4. John Gribbin has received awards for his writing in both Britain and the United States and is currently a visiting Fellow in astronomy at the University of Sussex. His many books include In Search of Schr�dinger’s Cat, Stephen Hawking: A Life in Science (with Michael White) and In Search of SUSY. John Gribbin is also the author of several science fiction works including Innervisions. John and Mary are married with two sons and live in East Sussex. Nice alternative to an Ice Age textbook

I'm a PhD student working on an Ice Age related thesis, which means that my reading consists almost entirely of scientific articles and textbooks. This book was a refreshing anomaly. It provided an evening with a dramatic arch and some good background information as to how we know what we know. It was, however, a bit too short: to my disappointment it did not say anything about Younger Dryas, which - apart from the fact that it is not explicable by Milankovitch cycles - is rather a crucial stage within the development of our own species.

Would have liked a little more

I love reading John Gribbin, but this book is too short, Whether by accident or design the book omits any mention of the role of carbon dioxide feedback effects on the Ice Ages. On the positive side the book is written in Gribbin's clear and precise style
