About the Author
John Cromie is one of the architects of Apple’s QuickTime ActiveX/COM control for Windows and is the principal at the software development and consulting company, Skylark Associates. Skylark specializes in software design, website architecture, and interface design, and has clients in both Europe and the United States. With a strong portfolio of successful projects, many of which feature QuickTime, Skylark has established a reputation for innovative software development of interactive and web applications on both Windows and Mac platforms. Having worked with QuickTime for over 12 years, John is a long-time QuickTime developer, first using HyperCard on the Mac, and then moving on to Windows with the advent of QuickTime for Windows. An experienced developer, John has successfully delivered numerous CD/DVD-ROM titles, websites and interactive applications using RAD tools, C++ and the QuickTime API. Must have to get started!

I am new to programming with QuickTime, and needed a jump start to write applications with a QuickTime component. This book takes you through the process of building applications for COM/.NET developers. Using the Apple component is a lot faster than using the SDK. I write a lot of RAD applications and use VB with occasional forays into C#.

The author writes clearly and with a lighter style than most technical authors. Sample code is provided and you can visit the website to download code and examples.

I would have like a little more discussion on interactive tracks, and still don't have a grip on VR movies (hotspots, wired sprites etc.). But those are probably beyond the scope of the QuickTime control.

Highly recommend this one!

A reasonable book about an inadequate API

The Quicktime API for .NET is heavily slanted towards content re-play rather than content creation. This book adequately covers the API, but doesn't make the leaps necessary to describe Quicktime.NET usable for content creation. Missing are memory management considerations, which are important when creating all but the smallest sample movies in Quicktime. The Quicktime system is huge and it's a daunting task to write one book that describes Quicktime's dot net API when the old Carbon and new-ish Objective-C APIs get all the development and documentation effort at Apple.

An Excellent Collection to Have

This book has no explanations of anything. It is Volume One of two of a terrific collection of schematic diagrams of all makes and models of tube guitar amplifiers, and maybe a few others. I bought both volumes as references, and as study aids in my learning to read audio equipment schematics. This collection is very extensive; so much so that there are schematics of amplifiers I have never heard of, and I was really up on this kind of equipment many decades ago. I would say overall, if you are going to want a collection of guitar amp schematics, buy both books so you will have the full compliment, from A to Z. You may never need them all, but if you are working on any of your own equipment, or especially if you are repairing any of these, even on a casual basis, you will find these books a great tool to have on the shelf.

About the Author
B.K.S. Iyengar was born in India in 1918 and has been teaching yoga since the age of 17. He has been one of the world's leading teachers of yoga for over 70 years and is internationally recognized as a leading authority of hatha yoga. His own style of teaching, "Iyengar Yoga", is followed by certified teachers across the world.

Beautiful and easier to follow

By far the most colorful book on Yoga. A nice and colorful introduction to Yoga. In contrast to his original book, Light on Yoga, Yogacharya BKS Iyengar has presented the contents in a more usable way. The discussion of asanas is easily understood with a number of photographs and visual hints. From his vast teaching and practice experience, he has pointed out an exhaustive list of contra-indications. Many of the postures has an 'all-round' view that helps the beginner in following the directions quite easily. As in his original book, a series of asanas are presented for different ailments. However, the postures are presented with photographs and in sequence which helps one practice much more easily than just referring to a list. An large number of ailments are covered. The hard cover helps the book spread and stay open while one can glance and practice.
You can expect the book to refer to and use a great number of props. While it may appear that the use of so many props in virtually every asana to be detrimental to a smooth practice, the author points out that in course of time one will be able to practice without the props, which is very reassuring. A nice compendium of translation of Sanskrit to English names of the asanas adds to the book's usability. All in all, a very inspiring and essential addition to the list of yoga books for the beginner, adept and the teacher.

A good supplement to Light On Yoga

I love Iyengar's original book, Light On Yoga. It is truly the 'bible of modern yoga'. Many poses are featured in that book. However, one of my beefs about it was the lack of pictures of poses utilizing props. Anyone who has ever taken an Iyengar Yoga class knows that props will play a big part in the class.

This book is an amazing guide to Iyengar yoga - including the use of props. It is a big book with TONS of photos. The pictures are clear as a bell and they are even clever enough to include different views of the pose so that you can learn what all parts of the body should be doing in the pose. Iyengar yoga is very alignment based - postures are precise. Through props, all of us can achieve the perfect alignment that Iyengar is a stickler for.

BKS Iyengar offers tips throughout the book - not just on the poses, but on other aspects of the yoga lifestyle - such as philosophy, diet and more. What I really like are the sequences for different medical/physical conditions near the end of the book - this is REALLY handy! With this book and his other book, Light on Yoga, you'll have everything that you need to begin practicing confidently and correctly.

A great book that covers alot; I only whish it was more...

I have long been expecting a book from Mr. Iyengar that addresses the changes in his yoga since the publication the now classic Light on Yoga. This book clearly speaks to three major factors that Iyengar yoga is now famous for, but which are not covered in depth in Light on Yoga: the use of props and so called "restorative" poses, the therapeutic use of yoga asanas, and precise attention to anatomical detail in the poses.
To accomplish this, the book is divided into three sections: the Introductions, Yoga for You, and Yoga for Stress. The introductions are somewhat superficial with oddly anomalous photos, perhaps useful only to those who know nothing about yoga. The introduction to Light on Yoga, while dense, is much more rewarding.
Yoga for You gives detailed anatomical instruction in around 27 of the most basic and important asanas. This section has more pictures and more instructional information per asana than any other book I've seen. I was initially put of by seemingly trite little offset "advise from the Guru" sections but they eventually won me over, simply because Mr. Iyengar's advice is really, really good.
However, this section omits so many asanas that are also important, that it becomes difficult to give it a full endorsement as anything but a supplement to other Iyengar books. In attition, it is geared towards beginners, so intermediate and advancesed students might wish to look elswhere for further instruction. Yoga: the Iyengar Way by Silva and Mira Mehta, for instance, has slightly less detail, but covers more like 100 asanas with more some intermediate instruction(even this work, however, cuts corners).
Yoga for Stress is the most thorough work on the use of props in existence. It also gives a large section of routines for various ailments (with little pictures for each asana - a great touch which is steadily becoming for common) and a 20 weeks course for beginners (without such pictures - a pity).
This is, in general, great material, but I have found three problems with it:
1. Beginner's modifications for asanas in part 1, as well as several asanas (like Prasarita Padottanasana) which aren't covered in part 1, are put in part 2 which makes it frequently confusing when following the routines. A beginner looking for a simple introduction to props and Iyengar yoga might do better with How to Use Yoga by Mira Mehta. 2. It's much less useful if your not willing to invest heavily in specialized props (my own furniture and blankets weren't really appropriate, although some people may not have this problem). In fact, if you are not totally committed to the heavy use of props, I would find it difficult to recommend this book at all. 3. There is no discussion of why the given routines are good for certain ailments (the benefits of individual asanas are, as is usual, given with the poses themselves) and the modifying of routines is discussed only briefly. Gary Kraftsow's Yoga for Wellness, by contrast, gives a lot more of this type of information (although it has its own drawbacks).
Despite these problems, the instructional material for what is covered in the book is to notch. I would recommend this work highly to anyone who uses or is interested in using props, Iyengar teachers, Iyengar beginners who are committed to this style of yoga and want to be thorough in their understanding of it's more singular aspects, and anyone who insists on getting detailed anatomical instruction straight from Mr. Iyengar even in the knowledge that it will leave you wishing for more.

Good practical tips

This book is a quick read but contains nuggets of practical tips on visualizing and exercises in the manifesting process. He gives great tips about using all your senses to visualize and feel your desire, and also has tips about how to become open to receiving. He also emphasizes how important it is to actually spend time doing these exercises every day as opposed to just reading about them, the same way a body builder needs to spend some time every day doing exercises to accomplish his goal. I have read many books including The Secret, Joseph Murphy, Wayne Dyer, and this author did give some very good practical advice not mentioned in these other books.

I am an author of a audiobook that covers a lot of what Mr Coronado covers in this book and I have to say what an outstanding book this is.

I bought it out of curiosity and stayed for the show. If you are looking to change your life then make this book a part of it, everything he speaks about here is the truth and nothing but the truth, but here's the gift, you would have to purchase at least three other books to get the same information that you get here.

Many are misled to believe that applying The Law involves sitting and doing nothing, when in fact it is the opposite.The process of reorganizing and harmonizing one's thoughts requires action, discipline and focus. It is indeed a science. Mr. Eddie Coronado has freely shared techniques such as creative visualization to assist those who are serious about changing their lives and harmonizing themselves with Universal Law. It's a must-read!

beginner watch collector

For the beginner this is a very good guide. I know that some makes of watches are not covered but all the top brands are there.I am still reading up on new questions all the time.
I collect pocket watches, but there is also a large section on wrist watches.So far i have found some good deals by using this books price and condition guide.Im sure if you are just starting out as a collector you will find this a perfect tool.

If you collect older watches, especially pocket watches, from the early to mid 20th century, this is the guide to buy. The watches featured contain detailed information and reflect the latest value trends. The book is a nice learning tool for those wanting to move into watch collecting.

Pocket Watches

It's a very nice book since I am a big watch collector. Since I am just a collector, not a watch or jewelry seller it's still a little confusing. I plan on bringing it into a jewelry store where they can help me understand it more. I really bought it for the Hamilton pocket watches since I have two. So if you understand the book it will be great for you, but it can also be great if you don't. All you have to do is take it to a jewelry dealer and they can probably help you understand and make the book more valuable to you.

A Most Beautiful Play

Kalidasa is India's greatest Sanskrit poet and playwright. Many centuries after his death, his commitment has not flinched to remain India's most respected bard. When you've read world's greatest plays, you must then read this play for the proverbial dessert. For most people, drama was invented in Greece, yet Kalidasa didn't know that, being apart by sea and time. So far as he is concerned, he was as much an inventor of this art, as were his more famous counterparts.
`Recognition of Sakuntala' is a beautiful love story of a married king with a country girl, his deserting her and eventually reclaiming back, with the aid of providence.
I've several translations of this play, but Johnson's version is probably the best - at least in English.
If Shakespeare or Tolstoy or Munshi Premchand gratify you, Kalidasa will as much.

A hit in Europe around 1789

The original translation by Sir William Jones of this famous Indian play was popular accross Europe and read by prominant poets including Goethe and Schiller in the late 1700's. Sir William Jones was also a member of Samuel Johnson and Edmund Burke's politically influentual Literary Club and the translation by him, this is not it, was a small hit across Europe. It inspired some stylist influence upon Goethe and Goethe must have read this about the time of the end of his "Italian Journey" where he later gained some creative energy after a dry spell following the massive success of his "Sorrows of Young Werther". (Sir William Jones is most famous today for observing that the similarities in Latin, Sanskrit, Persian, English and other, now called, Indo-European languages could not be just an accident).

This modern translation by W.J. Johnson is a good effort; however, for a variety of reasons loses something in translation as it was written to be performed in at least two languages, Sanskrit and Prakrit, and also involved a lot of body language which at times was almost like a dance. Sir William Jones' translation is more vibrant and historically relevant, and other translations of his of Oriental translations as well as original poems, had an impact on 17th and 18th century European literature.

Jones was a romantic supporter of the American revolution, even meeting with Benjamin Franklin in Paris to attempt a resolution to the crisis and play Franklin a game of chess. Jones' most famous and widely popular poem, while he was alive, was "Caissa, or, The Game of Chess" which would have gotten Jones through many important doors and meetings.

The play "Sakuntala" was written in the 4th or 5th century CE in India and is considered one of India's great plays. It is interesting for the cultural attitudes of India at that time, especially the strong class system, and making comparisons with other cultures around the world. Never-the-less The play still holds its own in translation as something many readers might find poetically brilliant, entertaining, and also funny.

Byron was also a youthful reader of Jones and there are a lot of stylistic similarities between them. Byron even wrote a parady of some of Jones' poems in his youth.

Jones spent his later life, in India, assisting in setting up a legal system for India which Jones insisted should be based in large part on Indian culture and customs. Jones represents a more early liberal, respecting relationship with the colonies of India; not the heavy-handed British paternal one that was to dominate that relationship after Jones' death.

(When universities teach diversity they should also teach it from the perspective of history; my professors acted like the 60's generation discovered multiculturialism and cultural appreciation. Why wouldn't a society that appriciates other culturals know the name of Sir William Jones? To me it points at some decrepidy that we don't).

Youth pushes up through all her limbs

W. J. Johnson's introductory essay is thorough and informative, pitched at the general reader but never condescending. It begins with a brief outline of what is known of Kalidasa’s life and an assessment of the place of Sakuntala in the canon of world drama. A succinct and illuminating outline of the plot and structure of the play follows. The Recognition of Sakuntala tells the story of the love between King Dusyanta and the beautiful Sakuntala, who lives in the woodland hermitage of her foster father, a devout ascetic called Kanva. Sakuntala and Dusyanta contract a secret “love match” after which the King returns to his court leaving her his ring as a keepsake. Shortly afterward, distracted by thoughts of her lover, Sakuntala neglects her duties of hospitality and becomes the unknowing victim of a curse: her beloved will forget her until she produces some token of recognition. When she subsequently appears at Dusyanta’s court visibly pregnant, she is rejected unrecognised. Even worse, when she tries to produce the ring to prove her story, she discovers that it was lost in her journey. After her public humiliation, Sakuntala vanishes into a heavenly beam of light (provided by her mother, the nymph Menaka). When the missing ring is later found in the belly of a fish, Dusyanta remembers his lost love and is plunged into despair and remorse. He is eventually called into service by Indra, king of the gods, to battle a gang of troublesome demons. On his way home, Dusyanta visits a celestial hermitage where he is fortuitously reunited with Sakuntala and meets his young son—destined to be Bharata, a “world emperor.” Johnson’s summary provides a useful orientation to the world of the play and its style. In a further discussion of the play’s plot and structure, he demonstrates the ways in which six of the seven acts of the play mirror one another with the central fourth act serving as a transition.

Johnson's introduction continues with a discussion of the workings of Sanskrit aesthetic theory (as outlined in the Natyasastra) related to the play and the system of ethics that underpins its action. Here, Johnson addresses important issues of language giving an insightful overview of the cultural and political context reflected in the use of Sanskrit (the classical written language) and Prakrit (common spoken dialects) to delineate different characters and incidents in the play. He also alerts the reader to the gestural language of theatrical performance by means of which this ancient play is still comprehensible to modern audiences. Here he includes a helpful discussion of the levels of language employed in the text, explaining which characters speak what—verse, prose, Sanskrit, or Prakrit—and why. In the course of this he also illustrates how the works of Kalidasa came to be the preserve of Sanskrit scholars rather than remaining popular dramas. All of this serves to explain the reasons why an English translation, however skilled, is unable to effectively communicate the “verbal polyphony” of the original text. It is most useful to approach the play with this understanding. He goes on to provide detailed information on the verse and prose structures of the original and how the assignment of verse speaking reflects the aesthetic of the piece in terms of the rasas (aesthetic “flavors” or “sensations”) revealed and communicated by the play. Where the discussion threatens to become too complex for the non-specialist, the reader is helpfully directed to Johnson’s “Selected Bibliography” for sources of further study.

Again addressing the play as a piece of theater, a section on “Staging and Stage Conventions” explains the four types of representation in conventional Sanskrit drama: spoken word, gesture, costume, and emotion. These elements work together to create a uniquely performative dramatic language that transcends the written word. Johnson describes this as “’spectacle poetry’ as opposed to verbal poetry” (p. xxv). For those unfamiliar with the Indian Kuttiyattam theater tradition, this communicates some idea of the complex meta-text of performance that is a fundamental element of traditional Sanskrit theater.

Johnson intends this version of the play to be performable and says that he seeks to “liberate” the text through this translation. Does he succeed? On balance, I would say that he does. The text is accessible and is helped with excellent notes throughout. The obvious alternation between verse and prose gives some flavor of the complexity of the original without obscuring the drama. The action moves along at a brisk pace and the occasional textual notes are useful without being intrusive. It is a splendid story, beautifully told. The serious scholar might wish for more information -- e.g., to clarify certain elements of ritual -- but Johnson’s notes helpfully direct the reader to more specialist materials.

Following the play, Johnson includes the Sakuntala story from the Mahabharata in his own, lucid translation. It has been usefully condensed to provide only essential information, yet retains a sense of poetry and it is rendered, like the original, in un-rhymed verse. Shakuntala’s drama is just as compelling in the Mahabharata, but appears to be more focused on teaching ethical lessons than on exciting rasa. In this version Dusayanta does recognize Sakuntala when she appears at his court, but refuses to acknowledge her. This allows Sakuntala to offer some important lessons on the power of conscience, and the ritual, spiritual and daily necessity of wives and children (especially sons) for all men. One can see the source of much of the specific action in Kalidasa’s play in the Mahabharata, but Dusayanta’s abuse of Sakuntala seems brutal and unrelenting -- really quite shocking. When a “divine voice” demands Dusayanta’s recognition of his spurned wife, he as able to acknowledge her without engendering popular doubt and suspicion. It is clear that the epic addresses itself to moral lessons and political realities, most particularly the necessity for a king (and his successors) to be seen as legitimate. The play, on the other hand, is a great love story.

This handy and inexpensive edition will be a valuable text for students of Asian Studies, World Literature, or Drama.
