About the Author
Miriam Meyerhoff has�taught sociolinguistics in places as diverse as New Zealand, Hawai'i, the mainland United States, Vanuatu and Scotland. She has consulted on sociolinguistic issues for the print and broadcast media and published books and articles on language variation, language and gender, and language contact. She is currently�Professor�of Sociolinguistics at the University of Auckland, New Zealand.

The Kindle Version did not properly format the text correctly ...

The Kindle Version did not properly format the text correctly. Whenever there is a text box regarding a side note (usually at the bottom or top of the page), Kindle would insert it improperly between the text (especially between sentences), causing much confusion when reading the text. The actual text includes formatting (such as text box borders) that is not available on the Kindle version. If I learned anything, it's to never buy a textbook for Kindle. Get an actual PDF or physical copy.

but I did not enjoy this text

Perhaps my rating is due to the fact that this was the main course text for my doctoral sociolinguistics class, but I did not enjoy this text. This would be a good introductory text for an undergrad or masters course, but certainly not for phd level work. One positive: it is highly skimmable.

The title of this review pretty much summarizes it. Assumes the competency of the reader enough to be fairly technical, but does not go over his/her head with unnecessary academic jargon.
