About the Author
Gail E. Tompkins is Professor Emerita at California State Unversity, Fresno, and she continues to direct the San Joaquin Valley Writing Project.� She regularly works with teachers in their kindergarten through eighth-grade classrooms and leads staff development programs on reading, language arts, and writing.� In 1998 Dr. Tompkins was inducted into the California Reading Association's Reading Hall of Fame in recognition of her publication and other accomplishments in the field of reading, and recently she was awarded the prestigious Provost's Award for Excellence in Teaching at California's State University, Fresno.

DO NOT PURCHASE THIS BOOK -- PLEASE READ THIS REVIEW

This book was one of the worst books I've ever purchased in my 16 years of technology and I urge you NOT to spend your money on it. 99% of the book has NOTHING to do with cost management.
Being that the authors are with Price Waterhouse Coopers - they mention the topic of outsourcing more than 48 times in the first chapter alone. It felt a lot more like a sales pitch for their consulting company than any other book I've read. It became so repetitive and annoying that I was praying the book would get better.
It is rare to find a series of thoughts that have any real meaning throughout this entire book. Almost every paragraph is bulleted lists of ideas. It's like reading a book that is a terrible Powerpoint presentation on just about every page. I cannot remember when the author had more than three paragraphs in a row let alone paragraphs that were dedicated to the title of the book.
The constant bulleted items are extremely nebulous thoughts that serve to state obvious facts rather than specifics. Anyone that is looking for material on specifics about cutting costs around their telecommunications environment will find themselves getting very angry trying to get anything meaningful from this book. The book hardly covers cost management whatsoever. The author just decides we need yet another book to cover all the different telecom technologies from frame relay, ATM, to VSAT et al. Clearly this book does NOT live up to its title.
While the book looks to be rather thick with information, the actual content is around 120 pages (at best). The remaining pages in the book are various appendixes with totally nebulous things such as a glossary of telecom terms, lists of website links, other people's white papers, etc.. I'm positive that the publishing house added these things because they saw how small the amount of content was in here and wanted a "fatter" book.
I've purchased well over 200 books around technology, and this book is second from the bottom. I'm actually contemplating writing a letter to the publishing house demanding my money back.

Great Tactical Telecom Cost Management Book

Telecommunications Cost Management provides a tactical approach to telecom cost reduction. Not only do the authors provide easy to follow steps for executing a telecom cost management project, but they also provide useful tools such as templates, checklists and project plans to make the journey less daunting. The authors do a really good job of drilling down on the key aspects of VoIP, telecom security and satellite communications without a lot of technical jargon.
This is an excellent book and I highly recommend it to anyone responsible for managing his or her company's telecom spend or anyone consulting in the telecom cost management space.

Practical How To Book - not 50,000 foot theory

Our firm is in cost cutting mode, so I got this book looking for practical tips on how to cut our considerable telecom bill. What I liked was the step-by-step approach covering local, long distance and alternative technologies. Instead of a lot of theory, it gets down to USOCs and has a checklist of specific savings ideas. The audit program at the back rambled at bit but had plenty of detail. The book throws in some useful "shovelware" at the back too -- sample RFPs, contracts, things to look for in a good contract, etc. Defintely worth the money.

Part I What Is Self-Esteem? Self-Esteem Begins at Home When Torrey, my oldest child, went off to school at five years old, something very strange took place. Up to this point in Torrey's life, Mom and Dad had been her key fans, sitting in the bleachers, applauding her accomplishments. We had taught her to look to her parents for love and praise. As a result, she was a happy, confident child. Torrey herself did not change when she started school. She continued to come to us with her latest paper from school or with the playground stories of the day. But I changed my response to her. For some reason that I cannot explain, when Torrey began school, I felt that she did not need my approval as much as before. She was older now and other people, such as her teacher, were in charge. I still looked at her papers with her, but I began to miss some key events in her life. A Grave Error One day Torrey announced that her kindergarten class was putting on a play the next Tuesday evening. Naturally, she assumed we would be there. But I said, “That's a busy night for me, Torrey. I'll try to be there, but I may have to meet with some families that night.” Torrey looked at me, bewildered. She had never thought that her daddy might not come to the play. I had always been in the cheering section before. Why would I not be there now? She walked away hurt and confused. I passed it off as a part of growing up and assured myself that she would get over it. Not long after that event, I was walking in my neighborhood when I heard shouts and yells coming from the YMCA. It was a soccer game, a contest between two teams of six-year-olds. Thirty boys dressed in red and blue scrambled madly for the ball while their coaches shouted and the referee made calls and blew the whistle. As I sat on the lawn enjoying the game, I glanced around and noticed that I was in a minority. Out of thirty children, only four parents had taken the time out to watch their child. As I watched the coaches gesture and call, I realized that the parents had turned their children over to a coach as a substitute parent. So I watched the coaches' performance as a parent. I looked for individual attention, for evidences of unconditional love. I saw neither. The coaches gave the most attention to the boys with the most ability. The other boys either stood around the coach, trying to get his attention, or had given up altogether and were at the far end of the field wrestling, laughing, and giving each other the attention they needed. The coaches, who are performance oriented, had to focus on the performance of the child playing. They had no time for the children on the bench. I thought about those absent parents picking up their sons after the game and trying to have a meaningful conversation. Both parent and son would have a difficult time discussing the event. The parents would not know enough about what went on to ask questions that required more than one-word answers. PARENT: Well, how was the big game? CHILD: Fine. PARENT: Did you win? CHILD: Yes. PARENT: Did you get into the game? CHILD: Yes. PARENT: Well, how did you do? CHILD: Fine. PARENT: Well, that's great. We need to get right home so that you can get your bath and dinner before the baby-sitter arrives. They may have a better conversation if the boy scored a goal or made some spectacular play. However, a conversation like this focuses only on performance. The whole afternoon, the boy's relationship both with the coach and with his chauffeur/parent was based on his abilities rather than on his value as a person. I walked away from that afternoon soccer game saddened and very judgmental. To show the children they were valuable, the parents should have attended and shown an interest in the game and the child no matter how well the child played. On the way back home, however, it hit me. I was guilty of the very same thing. I had raised Torrey for the first five years to believe that she was very valuable and important to me. I had watched her take her first steps and tackle other new feats, and she always knew we were applauding her, not her performance. Then one day, she began school, and instead of being there for her as I had always been, for some reason I pulled back. No wonder she was bewildered

Practical, useful, and biblical approach to parenting

Good, solid biblical advice to parents about raising their children to be responsible and mature - or as Scripture would put it, lacking in nothing. Barnes is the director of a boy's home in Florida so he has experience working with numerous children and families as well as raising his own children. The primary emphasis of this book is countering the perception that as parents, we must protect our children from all failures and provide for their every need, even to their own detriment. Barnes begs to differ. While he is careful to establish clear boundaries, provide adequate avenues for communication and emphasizes appropriate discipline, Barnes encourages parents to let their children to mature by giving them opportunities to succeed.

Barnes writes that children need a stable, safe and encouraging environment to be able to mature properly. He encourages parents to establish family traditions to help produce that stable environment as well as giving the children age-appropriate responsibilities. He warns parents not to short-circuit the training by either not allowing the child to fail, or not providing shift and appropriate discipline to establish clear lines of authority and boundaries in which the child can operate and flourish. Setting rules and sticking to them is fundamental parenting, according to Barnes.

While the book wasn't earth-shattering, it was good. He balanced his examples using children from stable homes and children from broken homes so that all parents can identify with and apply the biblical wisdom given. I especially liked his chapters where he encouraged parents to talk with their children about sex at a much earlier age than it is usually done and the end of the book where he addresses the difficulties of raising adolescents going through the litany of life changes. About the Author
Jacquelyn Black received her B.A., B.S., and M.S. from the University of Chicago and her Ph.D. from Catholic University of America. She has been teaching microbiology to undergraduates since 1970. She is a member of the American Society for Microbiology, and she has received grants for conducting teacher-training programs.

In May of 2000, the Washington Academy of Sciences gave Jackie the Leo Schubert Award for Excellence in Teaching of Science in College. This award is given for exceptional teaching and writing in the field of microbiology, with particular emphasis on the teaching of undergraduate students.

In addition to her extensive teaching experience, Dr. Black has engaged in fieldwork and studies throughout the globe. Her travels have taken her from the interior of Iceland to Belgium, Germany, Lappland, China, South America, Portugal, tot he barrier reef of Belize, and most recently to over a dozen universities in Russia.

Dr. Black describes herself as an "incorrigible snoop," interested in all the various aspects and applications of microbiology. This natural curiosity, coupled with her classroom and laboratory experience, makes her uniquely qualified to author an introductory microbiology textbook. This book conveys her sense of excitement for microbiology and offers the most current information on developments and applications within this field.

Excellent text for microbiology.

Jacqueline Black truly has a way with with words. She has a very readable textbook. I have chosen this book for my Microbiology class. my students are primarily nursing students. The "extra" information she has included in the text adds a spark of reality to the text.

Best Intro Microbio Text on the Market

This book is the best intro microbiology textbook I've seen. The author writes in a very straigtforward, no nonsense, yet detailed fashion and explains concepts with a perfect blend of precision and simpicity that other books lack. The book has nice photos and illustrations to support the great writing.

A great book for a 200- level course

I used this book in the 200-level microbiology course I taught last year and will use it again this year. It has wonderful figures and great instructor resources. There are a few errors in the text, for example the glossary gives the definition of an auxotroph to be that of an autotroph, and the autotroph definition is that of the auxotroph. This confused my students.

It's a great book for a nursing/ non-majors microbiology course. I would stick with Brock's Biology of Microorganisms for a Biology Majors course.

--> Addition to this review (Dec. 2010), it's filled with errors, as is the instructors guides that are online for this text. It makes it difficult to teach something if the book is incorrect. For example, look up autotroph and auxotroph in the glossary. The definitions are backwards. This is just one example of many errors!!

This is a much revised and improved book edited by S. T. Peters. The chapters have been written by people from industry, or very engaged with industry, resulting in a very practical book. They present a book that, at 167 pages, is easy to read and very informative. This the ideal starting point for anyone wanting to begin doing filament winding or trying to automate their filament wining operation. This a completely revised, updated, version of previous books, now refocused on automation, with five out of nine chapters heavily focused on aspects of filament winding automation. The remaining chapters introduce mechanical testing, pressure vessels, and a description of industrial applications of filament winding. Unlike previous books, the emphasis here is on low-cost non-aerospace applications. Chapters 3 and 5 on patterning for pressure vessels and shell of revolution, respectively, get pretty deep into the particulars of the technology. Other chapters are more descriptive. Overall, the book is an excellent introduction that, complemented by experience and further learning, will definitely help the reader interested in filament winding. The authors present a wealth of information derived from experience. Chapter 2 is a descriptive account of automated equipment that is available. A similar tone is adopted in Chapter 4 where programming techniques are described from a practical perspective. The same approach can be seen in chapter 6 for the description of the hardware (equipment), mandrels, and practical techniques to filament wind a variety of geometries and features such as winding around a hole and so on. Chapter 3 presents a summary of equations for the design of pressure vessels. It is complemented by Chapter 5, where similar treatment is done for shells of revolution. In depth study of these topics can be pursued by consulting the references cited. The book includes many photographs and diagrams of practical applications.

Very good introduction to Filament Winding

I found this to be a very good overview of filament winding, with enough details to perform some in-depth analysis on tow-placement design. I lent the book to a new graduate student who is working on braiding techniques, and it helped him get up to speed very quickly. The only reason I did not give a 5-star rating is because there are some topic that I personally would have liked to have seen. These include the issues of curing stresses, co-winding with different fibers, more details on processing parameters that improve void content, etc. However, some of these topics are getting quite specialized, and adding them would have meant a much larger book. I do not know of a better book on the market right now on this topic.

I highly recommend The Lupus Encyclopedia. It's an amazing source of information, and I feel empowered by the fact that I have a reliable resource to turn to whenever I need it. No matter what your symptoms are or the level of severity, you owe it to yourself to get this book.

About the Author

Donald E. Thomas, Jr., M.D., FACP, FACR, is an assistant professor of medicine at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences and teaches rheumatology at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. He is a practicing physician and currently serves as a member of the Medical-Scientific Advisory Council of the Lupus Foundation, DC/MD/VA chapter.

A must-read for the Lupus community

I have read just about every Lupus book out there--from memoir to treatise, from books aimed at neophytes to those targeted at the experienced patient. At this point I could probably write one of my own. But I keep reading rather compulsively, hoping to learn something new that will prove helpful. Usually this task proves rather Sisyphean.

But I struck gold when I read this book, far and away the most lucid treatment of the disease I have ever read. Anyone who has Lupus should read it, highlighting it as I did on my Kindle. Anyone who cares for, lives with, or loves someone with Lupus should read it. And (unlike other Lupus books) anyone who treats Lupus patients--as a physician or nurse--should also read it. It is jam-packed with tons and tons of very helpful advice and medical information.

However, if you do not have any biology background (as I do) you may find certain portions of the book a bit hard to understand. Just skip them. They are not important anyway. The advice sections, which are extensive beyond belief, do not require any knowledge of science and are very clearly written. I do like that Dr. Thomas has not watered down his book as other physicians do, and that he assumes that Lupus patients can choose to read those sections or not.

I hope he realizes that by writing this volume, he will empower the Lupus community (which is huge). Armed with an extraordinary amount of his medical advice--some of it granular and some, not--patients can go to their physicians to ask for critical lab tests and game changing medications. Many Lupus patients are not fortunate enough to have access to quality medical care, for one reason or another. This book may further propel them to be their own medical advocates, and substantially improve their health. It is a must-read.

GREAT BOOK FOR SYSTEMIC LUPUS ERYTHEMATOSUS - for patients AND doctors

This is the most helpful book on lupus I've ever read, and I've read the medical tomes, the patient guides, the rheumatologist's guidebooks, medical student manuals. This book is great for patients, families and DOCTORS to understand lupus, the causes, the triggers for flares, the tests, and the treatments. It's huge. It's not really in encyclopedia format, it's just thorough. GREAT BOOK.

Poorly bound. Pages fall out when turned.

This book is so poorly bound that the pages fall out when you turn them. Not helpful in a reference book. I would appreciate a replacement.
