The first or the last

I just read this book recently after a long and torturous 40 year search for the "truth." It is like I have dogged Dennis' every step to finally arrive, in my understanding, at what he so simply expresses in this charming book. His list of references looks like the line up in my bookcase. As I read the book I witnessed myself sighing a series of quiet "yeap, yeap,..., yeaps." I was neither elated nor frightened by what I read, rather I was overtaken with an attitude of resigned recognition of the undeniable and blindingly obvious - like it or not, how else could it possibly be? I wondered what I would have felt if this were to have been the first book that I had read on this subject. I can't say for sure but my guess would probably have been either total dismissal or recoiling fear - in both cases my ego would have been running for its life. I think this because about 20 years ago I had both reactions when I first started to understand the real implications of realisation or enlightenment - no ego, no future, no past - no me! So what can I say to you about it? I don't really know, but if this is the first or the last book that you read on your search, what I can say is that you will, sooner or later, if you are serious, be forced to sigh in total resignation. As you go around and around the block you will have no choice but to finally admit that you will have to leave the block to parts unknown to ever have a hope of satisfying your insatiable thirst, and it will be the very last thing that you would have expected or hoped for but there it is - neatly and clearly summarised in Dennis' book. Do yourself a favour and just read it all the way through even if you then drop it and turn away from it for the next twenty years, you will be back one day and you will be glad. And then you will need and want to read, "I AM THAT" by Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj.

Dennis Waite - Crowning Glory

I read the book with the ardour of a high school student.
Dennis has done a wonderful job in covering the entire gamut of
advaita all the way from its Vedic roots to the masters of the new age. The effort is commendable both for its contents and the way they have been organized in a very systematic manner.
The paperback has eighteen chapters, perhaps an intentional or
unintentional take on the Bhagwad GItA, the advata classic, and makes very delicious reading for an aspiring palate. No wonder therefore that masters and veterans like Isaac Shapiro, Leo Hartong, Jerry Katz, Alan Jacob, Dr. Gregory Goode, Pamela Wilson, K. Sadananda and Jay Lakhani are all praise for it.
Dennis, as I know him from his profound contributions at Yahoo Group Advaitin and other web communities is a systematic researcher. The pains he has taken to collect, organize and elaborate information is obvious from beginning to end.
As the veterans have eloquently noted, it is a precious reference
book too for all advaitins. Dennis maintains a well-organized, very helpful website ... Just a peep into it reveals his great mastery and involvement. This book, the crowning glory, brilliantly supplements his web efforts. It should therefore prove a precious asset to libraries of philosophy the world over.
Dennis, the philosopher, doesn't forget to smile. In fact, he smiles all through, infectiously so, so that the reader keeps smiling too! Reading his book is like taking a stroll on the shores in the evening breeze in the company of a friendly uncle with the ocean of advaita roaring beside. Yet, Dennis is less avuncular than friendly. And, there lies the secret of this book, which is quite unlike others on the subject that leave the reader more confused than enlightened.
The book is a must for Westerners and English-educated Easterners interested in Advaita. Any book on advaita should stand above continental diversities. It is very heartening that Dennis and his work stand tall and tower over them.

Helping Middle Schoolers Develop New Skills

I like this curriculum. We used it for 7th grade girls and boys. We modified some of the exercises and had to omit a few. We always included the skill of taking a pause.

The skills in this book are essential tools for our 21st Century kids to stay focused and be kind and solid humans.

As a school psychologist I see the value, importance and relevance of teaching minfulness in the school. I see so many students with symptoms of anxiety, depression and minds that just seem difficult to slow down. Helping students understand how their brains work so that they are in control rather than their brain helps them use better practices to make better choices. I have used this curriculum over the course of this school year and have had positive comments of the curriculum's effectiveness from both students, parents and teachers. I recommend this curriculum in any format, class-wide, small group, individually, and I have even implemented at home with my two young boys.

Great way to study

This book is a great way of learning without it being strenuous. Studying for the bar/MBE is a game of strategy. Since you're sure you're going to spends hours studying anyway, you want to find a book like this that will get you the valuable knowledge without the brain pain. You can learn more reading this book, from the book itself, but then also being fresh enough mentally to continue your work, or go back to 'normal life' (not studying for the bar for an hour or two) without being tapped out.

All the info is there; where the book succeeds in keeping you fresh is not in lessening the info, but in the way the information is presented and the communication/teaching ability of the author.

It's broken down into the eight topics and has a great question/answer flow to it. You can tell it's written by an experienced tutor on the topic, because he's a great manager of your learning process. Since you can't bring the book with you to the bar exam, the author manages the studying process so you won't have to.

I definitely recommend this book to supplement bar prep. It distills down difficult concepts to the essential themes giving you a strong foundation to build off with your normal bar prep materials. Also great to use as review. Also check out the authors blog...very helpful.

Good supplementary resource

The strength of this program is that it teaches you a lot of vocabularies as well their pronounciations. It also teaches you some common French expressions.
The weakness of this program is that the learning is pretty dry. You go through about 360 words per one side (45 mins) of the 90 minutes tape, one after another. The words are divided into sections. In the French/English section, a French word is introduced before its English equivalent and vice versa in the English/French section. I didn't find this format very useful. The background music is also too loud and it sometimes make it difficult to hear what the French speaker is pronouncing. Because it throws at you with so many words, the only way to learn them is simply by repetition (to listen to the tapes over and over again until the words are beginning to get stuck in your memory). However, I did start to remember them after a while.
This program should supplement your other French learning programs. The words will only become meaningful if you learn how they are used via reading books, watching television programs, and speaking to others.

This is a fiercely good read! Must read and share

I was fortunate to read parts of this book when it was "created", as posts in Ode Magazine[...]. Anne's mindful, sometimes heartwrenching, often lyrical, but ALWAYS POSITIVE account of the aftermath of the destruction and of the deep well of humanity and community that it engendered, gave me great solace and courage in the aftermath of the Tsunami. It was a great gift to see the positive, birthing and renewing side of the events in Japan, and the potential that such events have to birth our greatest compassion, generosity and humanity.

The Japanese culture runs deep, and the Japanese were exemplary in the way that they came together. Anne's writings reflect this beautifully. This book does not just document the perspectives it contains, it is a pointer to that inner resilience that is in each of us - even in the face of the most horrifying and unimaginable. This inner resilience comes from experiencing what IS as mindfully as we can, in each new moment. Not an easy task, but the Japanese people (and Anne with her deepy heartfelt account) show us a way. This book should be read to groups and children/families/bookclubs. The determination and courage found within are an inspiration and the patient forebearance that are taught without teaching are something we all need in these tenuous times. I, for one, am grateful to Anne for her mindfulness in the face of great adversity.
