About the Author
Nicholas Olsberg is the former director of the Canadian Centre for Architecture in Montreal. Jean-Louis Cohen is the Sheldon H. In 1994, he worked with John Lautner to produce the architect’s monograph.

NOT the comprehensive book I've been waiting for... for years

This book is beautiful, it has lots of pictures and drawings I had never seen before. I have been waiting for a really great Lautner book to be published because all the others show 'pretty' pictures, but I have never been able to get a true sense of the buildings (I am an architect). i was hoping this book would have the pretty pictures and more overall drawings. This book is a great complement to the 'pretty picture books' as it has images that are not regularly seen in the other Lautner books..... I just feel this book doesn't truly satisfy my need for information and clarification on these buildings.

A book on SoCal architect, John Lautner

A former student and employee of Frank Lloyd Wright, Mr. Lautner was a Southern California pioneer in contemporary architecture. To describe his projects, the words, "dramatic" and "superbly detailed" are high on the list. Siting each home on the property was a key to their drama.

Perhaps I should add that, whilst a student at the old Chouinard Institute of Art (now famously known as CalArts), I signed up for a class (in 1968 or so) called. Architectural Appreciation, taught by Mr. Lautner. Well, to be honest, it was really about appreciating HIs architecture. But was a hugely rewarding class as we drove out to, and toured, many of his projects. Clearly, Mr. Lautner was not into duplicating his efforts from one project to the next. Each home he designed was unique in its own way taking full advantage of the views that were always abundant in the ambience and design. A home on the boardwalk on Balboa Island in Newport Beach looked out over the harbor and channel; the home in Malibu was on the beach in the Colony taking in the ocean views; a home in the Hollywood Hills (known as Silver Top) looked out over a lake and the Los Angeles skyline; a home built into the mountains above Palm Springs looks out over the Coachella Valley.

This book is well written and nicely designed with great photography. I do wish, however, it had been printed in the USA by a lithographer with the experience of producing fine art books. (There are only about three such printing companies who can do this type of work.) In the black and white photos, the shadow details occasionally plug up while the highlight details blow out. Too bad for such an important story about such an important figure in America's history of architecture. Safe to say, the original negatives and photo prints were much better than this. Alas, printing offshore does keep book prices affordable and accessible.

Required reading for everyone

This is an excellent read and is probably even more relevant today than it was when originally written. These two amazing women speak from their hearts to tell what it was like growing up in segregated Raleigh, North Carolina and their long lives in Harlem in New York. Their openness and honesty come off of every page.
I found their courageous stories very inspirational but also found they have put their finger on the issues of race that are very appropriate today. This is not a tirade, it is a story of the trials and tribulations faced by ordinary citizens of this country. it is a call to awareness. It's also a good read. It should be mandatory for some of our political leaders today.

Slow and steady wins the race

This book was recommended to me by my daughter when she was in high school. So I recommended it to our book club. It is the story of two black sisters who lived to be over 100 years old. I beleive a play was made out of the book years ago. Their story is heartwarming and also a look at African American history in the United States. The feel is similar to the movie " the butler " that is out now. Their story is simpler-- but it shows how important it is to take the long view on trials and tribulations in life. It also shows how one good buddy, in this case, a sister , can help you get thru anything. Upholds good old fashioned values, integrity, faith, always do the right thing. Ah that we could all live our lives to such a long story-- and say it is a life well lived. It is an African-American story that is a universal story of love and how it fosters longevity.

WONDERFUL SISTERS AND HISTORY

This is the life story of sisters Sarah and Elizabeth Delany, covering a span of a hundred years of American history. This will probably never happen again in such clear detail and memories, and by two sisters that were educated (both had advanced degrees),feisty, warm, loving and very conscious of family values. They spoke of slavery and of the reconstruction South, and famous figures such as Langston Hughes and Paul Robeson. They were front-runners in teaching and denistry,and helped break down racial barriers - and they busted through the glass ceilings before it was necessary and fashionable. The assistance from Amy Hill Hearth is particularly important as she was able to take their oral histories,and make them relevant to our world today. This is a signiciant book and a valuable resource, and I will make sure my teenagers read this one to give them perspective on the previous century.

Wonder twin powers ACTIVATE!

The pop culture reference above has probably already alerted you to the fact that I'm a good decade older than the kids who grew up reading R.L. Stine--which is not to say that I haven't read his kid lit. I'm that kind of adult. And let me put out there that I have nothing but respect for this talented author, so youthful Stine fans, please don't beat me up for the following review. Yes, it's critical, but I'll support my criticism.

Stine's latest foray into writing for adults is of limited success. First, a brief synopsis: After a prologue, we follow the exploits of "adventure travel blogger" Lea Harmon Sutton as she visits the mysterious Cape Le Chat Noir off the coast of South Carolina. It's a beautiful part of the country, but apparently no one visits due to the island's spooky reputation. Says Lea in a blog post:

"I've saved the best (or worst) for last. Here's the most interesting historical detail--and it's definitely creepy. Especially with frightening forecasts of a big hurricane heading this way. I don't want to talk about the hurricane now. I'm pretending it's not going to happen.

You see, Le Chat Noir was devastated by one of the most powerful storms in hurricane history. It was the Labor Day Hurricane of 1935. And I have every finger crossed that history is not going to repeat itself now."

Okay, we're going to return and look at the quote above more closely in a minute, but for now we'll move on. In short, you'll be shocked to learn that the hurricane hits. At this point, we are introduced to Lea's husband Mark, a child psychologist who is just wrapping up the book tour for his best-selling (if controversial) book about child rearing. He gets a panicked call from Lea in the hurricane while he's on stage at a book signing. He can't wait to wrap things up and head home to Sag Harbor and their two kids and his single mother sister to await further news from Lea.

Back to Le Chat Noir... The devastation is complete and Lea is traumatized. In the midst of the "horror," Lea encounters two angelic blonde 12-year-old twins, Daniel and Samuel. They tell her that they've lost their parents and home in the hurricane. Lea is instantly smitten with these two kids and decides on the spot that she's going to "adopt" them (in the completely illegal sense of the word) and take them back to New York:

"Later Martha warned her that she was being too hasty. `You don't know anything about these boys. You are acting on pure emotion. You need to wait till you can think about it clearly. Do some research. Try to find out something about them.'"

Ah, if only. Lea proceeds over the strenuous objections of her husband. We're now at 20% of the book, and at this point the story actually starts. What follows is a evil twin/bad seed mash-up with an utterly ridiculous supernatural twist. And I guess what I have to say about the novel is: There isn't enough willing suspension of disbelief in the world.

Let's return to that first quote I pulled. A few observations... Visiting a spooky island is considered adventure travel? And the fact that there was once a terrible hurricane is "the most interesting historical detail" a travel writer can come up with about the place? Meanwhile, with the island's history, another major storm is forecast and there isn't a single mention of evacuating in advance of it? And then, if you're an adventure writer who went into this scenario with your eyes wide open, to completely lose your mind in the aftermath? Finally, a past hurricane is considered "definitely creepy"? That will give you an idea of the level of horror in the novel.

Throughout the novel, I had big, big problems with believability of events and characters' actions, and that was before the supernatural even came into it. But there were many other problems. As noted above, this is supposedly a horror novel, and I am admittedly the biggest wimp alive. While there were occasionally gross-out scenes, there wasn't a single scary moment in the book. Part of me wondered if this was supposed to be some sort of horror satire, because I know that R.L. Stine is a truly funny man. If so, I missed the humor entirely. This book is notably un-funny.

And, I'm sorry to say, it is badly written. The more traumatized the characters became, the more cringe-worthy their dialogue. I could quote, but I'll spare you. And on the subject of dialogue, let's talk about redundancy. Three separate times, Mark confronts the eavesdropping twins asking "How long have you two been standing there?" within less than 100 pages. Who was editing this book? Because there were also flat out errors. At one point Mark states that he hadn't seen his wife in "a week" when it had been, like, a day and a half. At another point Martha claims that a priest who held a ceremony in 1935 "told" her something. Well, I suppose it's possible, but it seems highly unlikely.

Individually, none of these issues are deal-breakers, but when you have flaw on top of flaw, it gets awfully hard to immerse yourself in a story, and virtually impossible to believe it. Despite these many criticisms, I will say this: It wasn't a terrible reading experience. The book moved quickly. It was both well-paced and also relatively short, with brief chapters and lots of white space on the pages. I read the book in just a few hours, and while I can't recommend it or really say I liked Red Rain, I truly didn't hate it. I was curious to see what Mr. Stine had written, and now I know. I think I'll stick to his children's fiction.

This book was written so much like the books I read growing up. RL Stine did not write an adult book. He took a kids book and just added sex scenes. Horrible, Horrible read & a waste of money!

A disappointed R.L. Stine fan

As many others who have read this book, I've been an R.L. Stine fan since I was a child. I loved his Fear Street books and I have also enjoyed the few other adult books he has written. Red Rain, however, was a terrible read for me. I was able to guess the outcome of the book from extremely early on and there were no "chilling" or suspenseful scenes for me. The book had very slow parts and I found myself wanting to skip pages toward the end. As someone else stated in a review here, this is like a Goosebumps book but with bad language and a couple very tame sex scenes. I will not recommend this book to anyone. I do hope Stine continues to write adult novels, however I wish him better luck next time.

5 Stars for REA books!

This little 90 page book is incredible. It may be small but it's stuffed with hundreds of usefull words and phrases for the traveler or simply for the curious mind. Not to mention is prefaced with a breif history of the country and some interesting stats on the current republic of Romanina. You will also find some lovely black&whites of certain land marks and notable locations; like Dracula's castle. This book is incredibly helpful with those interesting accent and stress-markers that are so different to the English language. (Now I know why they say English is the most difficult language to learn!) The easy to read, easy to follow phonetics make pronunciations virtually fool-proof, without having to buy tapes.

If you are looking for a casual, easy to use, non-threatening, introduction into this beautiful and culturally diverse language, I highly recommend this book. It is the perfect stepping stone in your quest to being able to communicate in or at least understand the basics of Romanian!!

Pragmatic if not scholarly

This book can give English natives who do not master phonetic transcription of any kind a very useful idea of how to pronounce Romanian by reading and not listening--as close as native English speakers can get it. As long as students of Romanian possess no theoretical basis such as phonetic transcription (either American or European) which can help with reading a foreign language, and want to get a crash course in everyday phrases, this book provides an almost ideal approach to the learning of spoken Romanian--it is "nice and easy", as promised.

To those who want to learn it for more serious purposes, though--such as getting a better grasp of the language, writing correctly, or even taking academic courses in Romanian--I would suggest them to supplement with more serious books, such as the Teach Yourself Romanian Complete Course, for example.

like the title says. "Nice and Easy"

i bought this book because my girlfriend's family is from romania and she speaks the language. i wanted to learn the language so her family would see me trying to fit in and... well, let me fit in. after i got the book, i pulled out my phone and sent a text in romanian. she replied back in romanian. the only problem with the book is it does'nt go very deep. it's pretty short. i'd love it if the same people wrote something bigger in the same format. the pronunciation guides were great. if you're just looking at getting started at learning romanian, or you just want to impress a romanian/american girl (cuz they're so hot) buy the book.
