John L.B. Walker is RF division manager for Semelab plc, Lutterworth, England. He holds a B.Sc. in electrical engineering, an M.Sc. in microwaves and communications, and a Ph.D. in microwave directional filters, all from Leeds University.

Daniel Myer is president of Communication Power Corporation in Hauppauge, New York, and has 24 years of experience in the design and manufacture of broadband RF/microwave power amplifiers. He holds a B.S. in electrical engineering from Polytechnic University, New York and an A.A.S. in electrical engineering technology from SUNY Farmingdale.

Chris Task is a designer of analog, RF, and microwave circuitry for Sonoran Radio Research, Tempe, Arizona. He has over 25 years of experience in the field and holds an M.S. in electrical engineering from Pennsylvania State University.

A filing cabinet condensed into a book

This book is a must-have if you are designing HF magnetics, highly useful if you are seriously applying them, and still useful but probably not needed if you are just buying parts and plunking them on a PCB. This book is a collection of papers from the classic to the recent. The oldest was published in 1944, some are from the 1950s through 70s, but most were published in the last 20 years or so, when the rise of computer based modeling began to fuel innovation in the field. Because so much of this literature is scattered through various journals, magazines, and conference records, the fact that someone with a good eye for what is relevant has done the work to collect it all into a single volume is a great service. The fact that the articles range from classic windings-on-a-core transformers to baluns to microstrip give the book a breadth and continuity that enhances the value of the collection. However, many of the papers are highly theoretical. For the most part, this is not a how-to cookbook of readily adaptable designs. Some of the papers are trade magazine articles that emphasize practical results, and there are some manufacturer application notes, such as the inclusion of Motorola (Freescale) AN-758 "A Two Stage 1kW Solid State Linear Amplifier" that can as easily be pulled off the web. You also have such gems as the original papers by Wilkinson, Ruthroff, Guanella, and Marchand on the popular devices called by their names. Altogether, if you want something that you can pull off your shelf to learn at least something about almost any aspect of combiners, couplers, and transformers from HF through microwaves, this book will meet the need almost every time. If you are writing any sort of academic paper in this area, here you have a bibliography in a book. Highly recommended -- if you're sufficiently deep into these types of devices.

This is a collection of reprints of famous magazine and journal articles about passive devices used in RF designs that are hard to find. It is arranged in sections with a summary preceding the reprints.

The classic papers vary in clearness. The ones from trade magazines are short on theory but very practical for designers. The ones from scientific journals are very compactly written and may be hard to follow by some engineers.

MUST READ!!!

If I could rate this book a 10, I would. This is honestly the best book I have read in quite sometime. It is an incredibly personal and honest look into a family's life dealing with a devastating and terminal hereditary disease that few doctors know anything about. And how their journey has led them to do anything and everything they can to fight back, no matter how diffult or controversial it may be.

A Southern Familys Struggle With An Incurable Condition

I enjoyed this book vey much it was a quick read and was of interest to me as a former Medical Lab tech.It is the story of how a genetic anomaly passed on for many generations affected a small town family in the South.It is also the struggle of how one young woman dealt with this disease .A very good and absorbing medical mystery.

This is a fascinating book, but the title and subtitle are misleading. There is no mercy in the inherited illness that runs through a family, and there is no rescue or cure in sight. Despite an interesting history of prion diseases and the dedicated researchers who study them, at the end of the day there is only the fact that a test can let someone know if they are a carrier. Amanda is a young woman who has the courage to get tested, then has to live with the knowledge that she is doomed to a hideous and early death. Despite this, she goes on to get married and makes the brave decision to have children, but only through a complicated procedure that will discard fertilized eggs that carry the defective gene. Meanwhile, her devout sister decides not to get tested and to have children without knowing their ultimate fate. Time will tell if this painful and disfiguring illness will strike in the coming generation.

Each example is presented in generous spreads with large color reproductions and an insightful text exploring the artist's intentions and the piece's historical context. Most of these works no longer have the power to shock us, but a number of them still do. Together they offer a thought-provoking exploration of the artist’s duty to instigate, inspire, and move audiences toward new ways of thinking.

I majored in Art History and this is a great book for casual reading

I majored in Art History and this is a great book for casual reading. Each piece mention is only talked abut in 1-2 pages, so don't expect a real philosophical discussion on each work. WARNING, some of this stuff really IS shocking! There's a photo of a naked child in here and I'm really not thrilled to own a book with that in there. I wouldn't be showing this book off to new acquaintances, bosses/co-workers or easily upset parents haha.
