A man I helped to settle here
taught me a saying from Africa.
I'll bet you would like it:
A cow is God with a wet nose.

Kek comes from Africa where he lived with his mother, father, and brother. But only he and his mother have survived. Now she's missing, and Kek has been sent to a new home. In America, he sees snow for the first time, and feels its sting. He wonders if the people in this new place will be like the winter―cold and unkind. But slowly he makes friends: a girl in foster care, an old woman with a rundown farm, and a sweet, sad cow that reminds Kek of home. As he waits for word of his mother's fate, Kek weathers the tough Minnesota winter by finding warmth in his new friendships, strength in his memories, and belief in his new country.

From Booklist
Kek, a young Sudanese refugee, is haunted by guilt that he survived. He saw his father and brother killed, and he left his mother behind when he joined his aunt's family in Minnesota. In fast, spare free verse, this debut novel by nonfiction writer Applegate gets across the immigrant child's dislocation and loss as he steps off the plane in the snow. He does make silly mistakes, as when he puts his aunt's dishes in the washing machine. But he gets a job caring for an elderly widow's cow that reminds him of his father's herds, and he helps his cousin, who lost a hand in the fighting. He finds kindness in his fifth-grade ESL class, and also racism, and he is astonished at the diversity. The boy's first-person narrative is immediately accessible. Like Hanna Jansen's Over a Thousand Hills I Walk with You (2006), the focus on one child gets behind those news images of streaming refugees far away. Rochman, Hazel

From the Inside Flap
Kek comes from Africa.

In America, he sees the snow for the first time, and feels its sting. He's never walked on ice, and he falls. He wonders if the people in this new place will be like the winter--cold and unkind.

In Africa, Kek lived with his mother, father, and brother. But only he and his mother have survived, and now she's missing. Kek is on his own. Slowly, he makes friends: a girl who is in foster care, and old woman who owns a rundown farm, and a cow whose name means "family" in his native language. As Kek awaits word of his mother's fate, he weathers the tough Minnesota winter by finding warmth in his few friendships, strength in his memories, and belief in his new country.

Bestselling author Katherine Applegate presents a beautifully wrought novel about an immigrant's journey from hardship to hope.

Katherine Applegate is the author of several bestselling series, including Animorphs, as well as "The Buffalo Storm, "a picture book.

"Home of the Brave "is Katherine Applegate's first stand-alone novel. "In Kek's story, I hope readers will see the neighbor child with a strange accent, the new kid in class from some faraway land, the child in odd clothes who doesn't belong," she says. "I hope they see themselves."

Ms. Applegate lives with her family in North Carolina.

Good for 5th graders
By Kat's Treasures
My kid's 5th grade teacher is reading this outloud in class. She told me she was having trouble with it so we bought it to read at home where she can ask questions.
Nice quality paper back book.
It's written in poetry type format in the view point of a someone who doesn't speak English very well so describes items strangly. Seems to evoke much thought and teaches to visualize the text.

Home of the Brave, book of the year
By Tina Nichols Coury
The idea of these Sudanese immigrants being transplanted to a Minnesota town fascinated me. What I didn't expect was to read one of the best books of the year. Told by Kek, a young boy from Sudan, who saw the murders of most of his family, Kek is separated from his probably dead mother and his relief to be in Minnesota with his aunt and cousin. It was so easy to love upbeat Kek and his utter confusion of his new life in America.

From snow, escalators, jeans, language and cleaning the dishes in the washer. I laughed at his view of these ordinary things. But he also reminded me of how wealthy our country is compared to most of the world. His marveling at the apartment that his Aunt and cousin live in "That is a palace." Kek finds it easier to adjust to this life than his older war scared cousin, Ganwar. I got caught up in Kek as an optimist. Kek changed the life of others by just asking to help and being the cattle herder that he was. But the most incredible thing about this wonderful book is the language. Written in poetic verse, the words bathed me in description of place, time and emotion. I laughed and weeped and wanted more. READ THIS FABULOUS STORY!

Poignant, recommend for ESL students
By Carolyn Wilhelm
Love this book! For anyone who has had to move away from home, not just those who move to America and completely change their lives. Poignant and deep. I liked the poetry format and how the author lets the reader in on what is going on while simultaneously revealing the growing understanding of the newcomer. Highly recommend!

Excellent Sketch of the Dispensational View of the End Times
By Dr. Marc Axelrod
J. Dwight Pentecost produced a massive 600 page study of the end times back in 1958. This softcover book by Herman Hoyt is a good alternative for those who don't want to read Pentecost's weighty tome. Hoyt begins with an overview of biblical eschatology, defining terms such as end, last, Second Coming, Imminent, Tribulation, and Mediatorial Kingdom.

The author proceeds into a study of what the Bible says about death and the intermediate state between death and bodily resurrection. He concludes from such texts as 2 Corinthians 5:8 and Phillipians 1:21-23 that the souls of believers are ushered immediately into the presence of the Lord the moment they die.

There is also a chapter about the second coming of Jesus Christ and how this event (described in Matthew 24 and Revelation 19) differs from the coming of Christ to rapture the church (1 Thessalonians 4:13-18). While not everyone will agree with Hoyt about seeing the coming of Christ as a two stage event, he does a good job of presenting the view. He labors hard to show why the partial rapture view and the mid tribulational and posttribulation views of the rapture are not as biblically sound as the pretribulational view. Hoyt repeatedly charges those who disagree with his take on the end times as not having a consistently literal interpretation of the Bible. I feel that this is not always the case, as there are many people who hold to different views of the rapture who do attempt to interpret literally.

There is also a helpful chapter about what the seven year tribulation will be like and another chapter about the rise of the antichrist and his evil nature. Hoyt also discusses the one thousand year reign of Christ on the earth, the different judgments in scripture, and the eternal state. The two surprises from my perspective were that a. Hoyt believes that the raptured church will be in heaven for the entire millennial reign of Christ and b. There will be an eternal distinction between Israel, the tribulation saints, the Old Testament saints, and the Church. The Church will have a greater position in eternity than the other groups, although Israel will be the greatest nation.

My problem with this last teaching is that the Bible seems to teach that we are all one in Christ (Galatians 3:28, 1 Cor 12;13) and that there is only one people of God (1 Peter 2:9, John 10:16).

But all in all, I really liked the book.

Excellent survey of Biblical Eschatology
By Dr. Luke E. Kauffman (lekauffm@liberty.edu)
Having had the author as a student where he taught at Grace Theological Seminary, his text is an outstanding review of his lectures. Dr Hoyt gives a thorough analysis of the various views of Biblical Eschatology. This text is a most both for the serious laymen and the person behind the lecturn who wish to expand their knowledge of "things to come".

Great Handbook... Don't try to read front to back!
By Ashley Pichea
I found this book difficult to `sit and read' as it is much more of a `handbook,' requiring detailed attention to the enclosed topics. My highlighter and pen were constant companions as I explored biblical eschatology from a premillennial dispensational view in "The End Times." This is a book that I will keep as a reference and `go to' guide for years to come.

Great reading comprehension program at home !
By Alice Jackson
If you want to improve your child's reading comprehension skills, use "Your Reading Power" based on SRA Reading Lab. which is used in many classrooms. My two children have been doing about three lessons a week. In fall, in their classrooms, they will use SRA Reading Lab, so this is a good review of upcoming school year.

SRA is a great language development tool.
By lynn lynn
I loved SRA as a kid and still love them now. I remember back in elementary school our classrooms would have SRA. We pick out a card and begin to read short stories then answer a few short questions at the end. You would move up to the next color set of cards until you got to the end. These are great for my grandson who is two almost three but can comprehend the stories. Even though he can't physically take the quiz after each card he can verbally answer them. This ia a great language development, communication/vocabulary builder for my grandson.

Bought this for my daughter to use in her classroom for kids that continue to struggle with their reading skills. She has it set up at an audio station in the classroom and is seeing improvements in both reading level and comprehension of the kids who were struggling.

Voice and Equality: Civic Voluntarism in American Politics, by Sidney Verba, Kay Lehman Schlozman, Henry Brady

This book confirms the idea put forth nearly a century and a half ago by Alexis de Tocqueville, that American democracy is rooted in civic voluntarism--citizens' involvement in family, work, school, and religion, as well as in their political participation as voters, campaigners, protesters, or community activists.

The authors analyze civic activity as none have before. They have created an original survey of 15,000 individuals, which includes 2,500 personal interviews, that focuses on the central issues of involvement: how people come to be active, their motivations, their resources, and their networks. We see fascinating differences along cultural lines, among African-Americans, Latinos, and whites, as well as between the religiously observant and the secular. We observe family activism moving from generation to generation, and look into the special role of issues that elicit involvement, including abortion rights and social welfare.

This far-reaching analysis confirms that some individuals have a greater voice in politics than others, and that this inequality not only results from varying inclinations toward activity, but also reflects unequal access to such vital resources as money and education. This deeply researched study illuminates the many facets of civic consciousness and action and confirms their quintessential role in American democracy.

Review
[The authors] have written a splendid and engaging empirical treatise--large-scale social science at its very best--on how social and economic resources influence the extent to which, and the ways in which, people participate in politics and voluntary organizations. (Robert Y. Shapiro Political Science Quarterly)

This is undoubtedly an important book with revealing findings that contradict some popular assumptions about the health of democracy in the US. Despite the well documented loss of confidence in political institutions and the decline of electoral turnout, Americans continue to participate extensively in both political and non-political organisations. The voice of the people is clear and loud even if some voices are able to demand more attention than others. (David Mervin Borderlines)

The authors of this book have, together and separately, been fruitfully investigating political participation and inequality for years. Juggling a dazzling, mind-boggling array of original survey data, their new work makes the clear case that citizens' experience outside the realm of official politics--experience at home, church, work, school, and 'nonpolitical' voluntary associations--infuses their ability and desire to participate in politics. The ideal image of the public sphere is that it [can] compensate for inequalities bred elsewhere; this study forcefully shows how public life actually amplifies them...The marvel of this compendium is that it keeps so many questions in the air simultaneously...The book is an extremely rich source of data with many startling, thought-provoking finding. (Nina Eliasoph Contemporary Sociology)

Is American citizenship in crisis? Yes, say most pundits, not to mention most scholars of contemporary political life. A more nuanced reply appears in this comprehensive study...Voice and Equality presents a challenging paradox. On the one hand, the discourse of class is becoming less salient--in a political regime that has never been heavily imbued with the rhetoric of economic inequality. On the other, the state of political participation in America is now such that 'class matters profoundly. (Sidney M. Milkis Wilson Quarterly)

Voice and Equality is a major contribution to understanding patterns of political participation in the United States. First, it advances our knowledge of participation by providing descriptive details about the characteristics of those who engage in a variety of political actions beyond the electoral and campaign activities that can be examined through data collected in the American National Election Studies. Second, models to account for variation in several types of political activity are specified and tested. Third, the effects of participation on representation are assessed. (M. Margaret Conway Journal of Politics)

[A] significant event in the study of political participation and democratic politics...Voice and Equality documents our progress as a discipline in understanding the role of citizens in democratic politics. Day-to-day, such progress may be difficult to see, but over the longer haul it becomes quite apparent. Students of citizenship and democratic politics will want to read Verba, Schlozman, and Brady in order to witness that progress, as well as to understand the challenges that lie ahead. (Robert Huckfeldt The Review of Politics)

From the Back Cover
This book confirms Alexis de Tocqueville's idea, dating back a century and a half, that American democracy is rooted in civil society. Citizens' involvement in family, school, work, voluntary associations, and religion has a significant impact on their participation as voters, campaigners, donors, community activists, and protesters. The authors focus on the central issues of involvement: how people come to be active and the issues they raise when they do. They find fascinating differences along cultural lines, among African-Americans, Latinos, and Anglo-Whites, as well as between the religiously observant and the secular. They observe family activism moving from generation to generation, and they look into the special role of issues that elicit involvement, including abortion rights and social welfare. This far-reaching analysis, based on an original survey of 15,000 individuals, including 2,500 long personal interviews, shows that some individuals have a greater voice in politics than others, and that this inequality results not just from varying inclinations toward activity, but also from unequal access to vital resources such as education. Citizens' voices are especially unequal when participation depends on contributions of money rather than contributions of time. This deeply researched study brilliantly illuminates the many facets of civic consciousness and action and confirms their quintessential role in American democracy.

Good Point, But A Little Long Winded
By Dr. Jones
This book starts with a sound premise. That Americans gain more knowledge about political life by being involved in nonpolitical groups. People need not be political junkies to possess some degree of efficacy, rather they can advance this by participating in civic affairs within their communities. The end result will be that they will possess skills that they can use to advance their political goals. This is a very important finding because it sheds light upon the fact that people need not be involved in political action 24-7 to get ahead when they are forced to work for something they want. My only complaint with this book is that is too long in parts. It is just too long.

Understanding participation
By A Customer
This book provides several useful ways to understand the phenomenon of political participation -or the absence of it. Verba and his collaborators examine several variables that encourage people's involvement in politics, showing clearly that if differential rates of political activity reflect not different motivations, but differential resources, democracy is potentially threatened. The book is theoretically and empirically well-grounded -two characteristics of Verba's previous work that appear here again. In spite of being concerned exclusively with the American case, I think it will be a worthy reading for any person interested in politics in other countries, as it was for me.

Verba is great!
By connie z
I got this book for a class I took with Professor Verba. I'm a science major, and this was just an interesting government course I took. I ended up loving Prof Verba AND his book; it's laid out very clearly, and breaks government studies down into a social SCIENCE (with methodology and hypothesis testing) rather than just spouting theories. Needless to say, I really appreciated this. PS- Prof Verba is also one of the best professors I've ever had, and it is definitely reflected in his writing.

Conjure, by Alice Hoffman

"It was August, when the crickets sang slowly and the past lingered in bright pools of glorious light, even though it would soon be gone, the way summer was all but over, yet the heat was still on the rise. The weather had been extreme that month: days of drenching rain, sudden showers of hail, temperatures passing record highs. Local children whispered that an angel had fallen to earth in a thunderstorm. There were roving groups who swore they had found signs. Footprints in the grass, black feathers, a campfire in the woods behind the high school where there were sparks of shimmering ash. One neighborhood boy vowed that he had seen a man in a black cloak rise above the earth and walk on air, and although no one believed his account, mothers began to keep their children home. They locked the doors, called in the dogs, kept the lights on after dusk..."

Over too quickly!
By dandy mandy
I love Alice Hoffman books, so I purchased this for a flight, not realizing it was a short story. It was excellent, and I tore through it in a matter of minutes. So, other than the disappointment from it being so short, I loved it. I enjoy how her books all have an element of the inexplicable. She can turn ordinary things into something mysterious and ominous.

While it's only a few pages long, as always, Ms Hoffman manages to come up with another winner. This story was written for a tribute to Ray Bradbury collection so if you love his work, you'll enjoy this story. Extra points if, like me, you love both these authors!

The Kerala Kitchen: Recipes and Recollections from the Syrian Christians of South India (Hippocrene Cookbook Library), by Lathika George

Since ancient times, seafarers and traders have been drawn by the lure of spices to Kerala, a verdant, tropical state on the Malabar Coast of South India. Saint Thomas also traveled this spice route, converting several local clans who later intermarried with Syrian traders who had settled here; thus was born the vibrant Syrian Christian community of Kerala. Today, ayurvedic massage resorts and backwater cruises make this scenic land a top tourist destination, and spices still draw both travelers and gourmands to its rich culinary heritage. It is this legacy that The Kerala Kitchen brings us, through 150 delectable recipes and the unforgettable stories that accompany them. Authentic and easy to prepare, these recipes are adapted for the North American kitchen, and accompanied by a guide to spices, herbs, and equipment, as well as a glossary of food terms.

Review
"Here you will find clear recipes for the best of Kerala's fine foods, written with great love by someone who has been a part of that culinary tradition since birth." --Madhur Jaffrey

A delightful, evocative, sumptuous menu, redolent of fresh green paddy fields, coconut palms swaying in the breeze, and the pungent spices of the Malabar coast…mouth-watering and heart-warming! --Shashi Tharoor

I have never read a cookbook from cover to cover in one sitting, but then The Kerala Kitchen is so much more than a cookbook: It is a travelogue, memoir, and food diary. What better way to understand the community of Syrian Christians of Kerala my community than through our appetites. THE KERALA KITCHEN is a must...the easy and elegantly described recipes, the primer on spices and their uses, make these dishes accessible to all. Enjoy! --Abraham Verghese

Enhanced with a section of full-color photographs of finished dishes
By Midwest Book Review
Along the Malabar Coast of Southern India there are communities of Syrian Christians, originally founded in the first century by St. Thomas who converted several Brahmin families to Christianity. It was these early Christians who then intermarried with Syrians settling there. The result was the creation of the vibrant Syrian Christian community of Kerala and its rich culinary heritage that is so superbly showcased in Lathika George's elegant ethnic cookbook "The Kerala Kitchen: Recipes And Recollections From The Syrian Christians Of South India". Interlaced with the recipes for exotic dishes are anecdotal stories associated with them and the community from which they spring. The recipes range from Rice Flatbread; Yams with Ground Coconut; Fish Roasted in Banana Leaves; and Kerala Chicken Roast; to Spiced Cooked Buttermilk; Sweet Plantain Chips; Smoked Gooseberry Preserve; and Mango Mousse. Enhanced with a section of full-color photographs of finished dishes, a glossary of specialized terms in both English and Malayalam, a five-title bibliography, and an index, "The Kerala Kitchen" is a thoroughly 'user friendly' and enthusiastically recommended addition to personal, professional, family, and community library ethnic specialty cookbook collections.

disappointed
By Amazon Customer
After attending a wedding in interiors of Kerala i fell in love with traditional syrian christian fare. Finally I got this book as a valentine's day gift . Like many food blogs today ,this is certainly a good read. It gives a very beautiful glimpse of the kerala.

But when it came down to practical cooking i was a little disappointed .I did read in a food blog that the measurements of the spices in some recipes in this book are not so correct , and found that to be true after trying a couple of recipes.

If it is meant for someone who is not familiar with the cuisine ,the absence of pictures/color photographs of the dishes can make it very difficult to imagine what the end product must look like. The easy way to find the pics is to google the original name of the dish(not the elaborate translation of the original names) .The pictures can be found on the numerous food blogs , but so can the recipes!!
The author has also made some basic mistakes in the names of the dishes like writing kappalandi (peanut) where she has meant kashuvandi(cashewnut).Agreed that the author is brought up outside Kerala, but the research of the right names of the food item should at least be done when writing a cookbook. You will not get the right image if you search for kappalandi chertha kozhi(chicken with peanuts) instead of kashuvandi (cashewnut).
The traditional names are written in a much tinier size under their english description. Its like searching for "pizza" in an italian cookbook and finally finding it written inconspicously under something like "oven-baked, flat, round bread typically topped with a tomato sauce, cheese and various toppings." I dont know if it is just me -But i find it very annoying to search for "pineapple with yogurt and mustard sauce"; instead of "pineapple pachadi"; or "Flaky kerala flatbread&" instead of "parotta".
Altogether a good read but not a very good cookbook.

A pleasure for the mind and stomach!

The Kerala Kitchen: Recipes and Recollections from the Syrian Christians of South India (Hippocrene Cookbook Library)

Any self proclaimed Indian cooking expert should and MUST have this cookbook on his/her shelf. Chock full of traditional mouth watering recipes, this slim volume of delectable Kerala SYRIAN CHRISTIAN (and there is a difference!) dishes will leave you salivating and ravenous.
As a second generation displaced Keralite growing up in Africa and Europe, I never appreciated such meals as Fish Roasted in Banana Leaves (see page 80) or Toddy Pancakes (see page 43). My siblings and I preferred canned sausages and mashed potatoes over Yesterday's Fish Curry (Page 86) or Fried Bitter Gourd (page 150). Indifferent to our finicky palates, my parents insisted (force fed, I should say!) on a daily diet of rice accompanied by a meat or fish dish and some form of coconut based vegetable. We groaned and moaned, but nevertheless ate what was put in front of us.
My mother, known for her superb culinary skills, had tried to impart her knowledge of making a scrumptious Chicken Stew (page 127) or lip smacking Duck Roast (page 135) but I resolutely stuck to my versions of insipid shepherd pies and tomatoey spaghetti bolognaise.
It was only after going away to University that I began to develop a liking for our regional food. Baked Beans on Toast was fast losing its bland appeal!

Moving to the United States and discovering an incompetent cook in my husband left me longing for my mother's (once deplored!) cooking and a desire to mimic her. I would spend ages on the phone with her, writing down detailed recipes on scraps of paper and attempting to make them later.

Lathika George's "The Kerala Kitchen" came as a complete joy to me. I love to read and I love to eat!

The cuisine of Kerala (a state located on the Southwestern part of India) is very unique and for Indians from other parts of India, just as unfamiliar as Roast Turkey and Candied Yams! Most dishes are rice and coconut based, seafood is preferred over meat or poultry and sour/spicy wins over sweet/mild.
Lathika George has managed to capture all of the popular dishes eaten by a typical Malayalee (native of Kerala) with a big nod to the state's Christian heritage.

This cookbook is an absolute delight to read and the recipes are authentic and user friendly. I highly recommend it to anyone wishing to try a different kind of Indian cuisine!
Happy Reading and Happy Eating!

Well-written, beautiful story
By Karen
I bought this book on my Kindle for my honeymoon simply because the reviews were decent and the price was low. I ended up reading it after my honeymoon was over, still...I found myself eager to get home after work each day, so that I could read more. I actually got through the entire book in about three days, and felt as if I went on an emotional journey as a read this book. As an adult, I think I appreciate this book more than if I were a teenager, having lost all but one of my grandparents, and having reflected back often on how my own parents were shaped by their parents.

Funny stuff
By K. Scott
My young nephew had just finished reading this book. I asked him, "Did you like it?" He said, "It's good." Which for him is a rave review. I picked it up and, as they say, I couldn't put it down. There are so many funny observations about people and family life, it had me chuckling, page after page. The young narrator writes, "I guess I take after my mom... she never does the dishes until it comes time to actually use the plates... One of my mom's jokes is to call our stack of take-out menus her cookbook." By the time the supernatural stuff started, I was hooked. (And, thank god, the ghostly time-travel stuff is anchored so deeply in the real world, I stuck with it and began to really enjoy it, even though I usually flinch from fantasy.) This is such a well-written and delightful story. I look forward to the author's next book.

Must read!
By AMK
SLIPPING is a book you just have to read. We're part of a mother-son book club and were lucky enough to read this book when it was in manuscript form. We liked it enough to re-read it again when it went to hardcover (June 08). Cathleen Davitt Bell did a great job creating an interesting book. It is a new twist on fantasy. We wanted to keep reading it to find out how the main character handles school, friends, and family issues. We weren't able to put the book down until we figured out the "slipping" aspect. Great ending. We're still thinking/talking about this book and sharing it with friends. A must read. We hope there will be a sequel. -- Mom (42) / son (15 and a huge fantasy fan)
