The spelling and grammar in this book need some serious attention!

The story is really interesting but the grammar and spelling mistakes(in every single chapter) are really frustrating. The first book in this series also had some but this book has a lot more. Sometimes it feels like you're reading a rough draft. There are several places where excepting is written when it should be accepting or expecting and jester where it should say gesture. Nobody's perfect of course but there has got to be a way to do a better job at proofreading!

Appalling, don't start the series

I have never not finished a series but I am seriously struggling to get through this one.
The story is not absolutely terrible (thus 2 stars instead of one) but the writing IS terrible. Poor grammar, horrible spelling, and use of the wrong words show a basic lack of English and writing skills. Characters are all dialogue but no depth. Main character is completely insipid and irritating.
It's not all bad, a part of me wants to know how the story ends, so every now and again when I have nothing else to read I cringe, spend the $4 or $5 and buy the next book, read it for a bit then when I can't stand it anymore I go read something else. However I do think they are very over priced for amateur novels. My best advice is to save yourself from my torture and avoid starting the series altogether (sorry I'm probably too late for most of you!). Could suit young teens and those who can look past the terrible writing and poor character development to an imaginative storyline.
But this author seriously needs to get some people to proof read for her.

Samsung String? Are you kidding me?

First of all, I bought this book because I loved the first one. Even though the Marcus/Emmy love fling is very juvenile. I mean, I'm reading a book for teenagers, am I not?

The whole goal of the first book being free is: The reader loves the book so much, they go ahead and BUY the next book(s) in the series.

But within the first few pages, I regretted buying this book. The grammatical errors are AWFUL! Did this author even HIRE an editor? If so, she needs to get her money back. Nearly EVERY PAGE had an error.

How do you go from SAMSON STRING to SAMSUNG STRING, and continue on like that? I would be humiliated if my book was released with an error like that!

Not sure if I'm even going to continue this series, even though I am curious as to what's going to happen next.

Really disappointed.

Must have for any Mentalist, Hypnotist and Illusionist!

Sleight of Mind was a turning point for me. It was the first book that captured the essence of the actual use (not theory in ideal-world situations) of suggestion and NLP. It also gave me a handle on how to develop my performances, and got me thinking clearly for the first time about my performance persona and what impact it had on my audiences. The NLP tips and tricks are incredibly useful, and the hypnotic induction advice is excellent.

It's a good, broad title that gets you thinking about who you come across as in real life too, and exactly why you get on with some people and not with others. Reading it there'll be times when you'll want to kick yourself for somewhere in the back of your mind already knowing some of its advice, and yet not acting on it. I read it once every few months just to remind myself how important what it says is.

This is a book that has severely got up the noses of NLP'ers and 'regression therapists' for coming clean about some aspects of NLP and Hypnosis. I'm glad to say that this is real life, usable stuff, not the hyped up bilge that most books on the subjects offer. This is the basics, the good stuff that everyone needs to know first if they're going to explore these things in any way, and I've got no hesitation recommending it.

I enjoyed 'Geist' by the same authors, both are good reads and extremely useful to those interested in or performing Mentalism or Hypnosis.

This is a pretty near faultless book for anyone interested in suggestion and its use in 'mentalism' (psychological magical effects). It's packed with bits of useful information about human behaviour, especially your own, which as others have said here are just as useful for non-performers as performers. A warning though, the people-watching this promotes is very, very addictive, and it will have you think twice about every movement and facial expression you and everybody else makes! If I'd read this at the very start of my forays into hypnosis and NLP I could have saved myself a small fortune on other books. Though it was continually recommended to me by performing members of the magic fraternity, I have to admit that I was very skeptical of their take on it because of the words 'mind control' in the title, but I quickly became a convert after reading it. Despite the name, nothing could be less hyped or more down to earth.

What I've never quite understood is how Derren Brown can bring out his book 'Tricks of the Mind' a couple of years after Sleight of Mind and use so much of the latter's material? Take out three hundred or so pretty superfluous pages out of Derren Brown's 'Tricks of the Mind' and you have a lesser version of 'Sleight of Mind' - something I wished I'd known before forking out for Brown's title.

EVERY mentalist should have this and Banacheck's books on their 'must buy' list. Forget the useless double-talk in Knepper's 'Wonder Words', this is the real deal and should not be missed.

The book covers the basics of the psychological techniques, through to the more advanced techniques that can actually be used to enhance your performance of magic and mentalism, and even to create unique and powerful effects and experiences for your audience.

The book is very well written, in no-nonsense language, cutting out the rubbish found in so many NLP/Hypnosis/Hypnotic language books. Stripping out the evangelical, self-selling, self-help rubbish makes this a concise (only 161 pages), easily readable volume on the real work behind powerful performance - this isn't just an NLP model, but an actual explanation of the psychological quirks, mechanisms and techniques used by those who give their audiences only the best.

Don't buy this book unless you are prepared to elevate your perfomance up a few levels!

About the Author

Alexander Anievas is the Anna Beigun Warburg Junior Research Fellow at St. Anne’s College, University of Oxford. He is the editor of Marxism and World Politics: Contesting Global Capitalism (Routledge, 2010) and author of the forthcoming manuscript Capital, the State and War: Class Conflict and Geopolitics in the Thirty Years’ Crisis, 1914-1945 (University of Michigan Press). He is a member of the editorial collective Historical Materialism: Research in Critical Marxist Theory.

Nivi Manchanda is a PhD candidate at the department of Politics and International Studies at the University of Cambridge. Her dissertation looks at Anglo-American representations of Afghanistan. She is also the editor in chief of the Cambridge Review of International Affairs.

Robbie Shilliam is Senior Lecturer in International Relations at Queen Mary, University of London. He publishes widely on issues to do with race, colonialism and international relations. He is author of The Black Pacific: Anticolonial Struggles and Oceanic Connections (Bloomsbury Academic Press, Forthcoming 2014); and editor of International Relations and Non-Western Thoughts: Imperialism, Colonialism and Investigations of Global Modernity (London: Routledge, 2010). He is chair of the Global Development Section of the International Studies Association (2012-2013), and on the Advisory Board of the Transnational Decolonial Institute.

The first 10 or so of this manga are worth a read (girly, fun, improbable!), but after that it lost me.

what can i say? i went through a very shojo time in my life. it's girly, it's fun and often romantic. this is a definitive shojo that totally is for boy crazy people. i really enjoyed this series but it went on WAY past 26... that's too much for me, investment cash-wise and the story started to get pretty poor and convoluted. ever seen weeds? like how it's so good and then all this stuff happens needlessly to keep the show going? yeah, that's this manga.

but the first 10 or so are gold. worth a read.

ok so im not gonna write a page long essay about the story, cuz that defeats the purpose of others reading it. i had read this story years ago, loved it, and had to own it... problem was that i was having trouble finding them in stores. found this used, for such a cheap price. had no damage to the cover, binding, or any of the pages inside. very happy with my purchase! :) recommend people buy this series of manga. :)

Oh boy...need an editor for this volume

While the series continues to be my favorite, I have to be fair and say that this translated volume was a bit diappointing. Maybe I am nitpicking, but wording is everything in a story. First. at the party, Tsukushi runs into Tsukasa after he brushes of two business associates of his father's. She is quoted as saying "I apologize" for the attack that happened in Vol. 3. She's not the one apologizing in the Japanese volume. It should've been translated as: "apologize" a request, because let's face it...why should she apologize to him for that?
Next error I found in the book: at the airport Rui appears after Shizuka left..then all of a sudden the page that follows is about the date that happens with Tsukushi and Tsukasa...Maybe again, it was just my volume, but the sequence where Tsukushi tells Rui bluntly to go after Shizuka is completely missing. After one page, the story continues on like normal. That was annoying. The last error I found was Sakurako calling Tsukushi Tsukasa! I mean their names are similar, but I think Viz can afford an editor to avoid these errors. I'm really disappointed with this volume and hope that Viz don't mess up Volume 5 which is one of the most important volumes in the series. This is a great series that has a lot of emotional up and downs, but we don't need disappointment added due to poor translations and editing. Come on, Viz. Pull your act together.

Sweet, tender and original story with exquisite illustrations. This book somehow already seems like a childhood favorite, one of the books that you kept as you grew up and gave all your kids books away. An especially fine debut for Tracy Hoexter. I'll be watching for more.

This is an incredible book, with a valuable illustration that everyone should read. Our unkind words can be so destructive and hurtful. Teaching kindness at an early age really can make a difference. This book belongs in every kindergarten and elementary classroom!

Stories, philosophy and history of Kuan Yin.

This is perhaps my favorite book by John Blofeld. The stories of Kuan Yin are well told, diverse and moving. He strikes an excellent balance between philosophy, history, story telling, Kuan Yin meditation techniques, and personal devotion.
There are a few pages of b/w photos, of Kuan Yin, Tara and Avalokiteshvara, the pictures vary in quality. However, many of them I have never seen before and a few definitely inspire devotion.
The fact that John Blofeld lived and traveled in China, his joyous devotion to Kuan Yin, and his knowledge of the Chinese language and culture adds immensely to the book and puts it in a class by itself.

Great "travelogue" about Kuan Yin, but not an academic work

Like virtually all reviewers, I really enjoyed this book. But I also feel people should understand what the work is, and is not. This is a description of the author's exploration of the worship of Kuan Yin across many different Asian cultures he's visited, and relating anecdotes from Kuan Yin worshippers about the boddhisattva. The question at the heart of the book and its author is, more or less, "Who is this figure, why does She impel such passionate devotion among so many, and is She 'real'?" While he dabbles in questions about the relationship between Kuan Yin and other Buddhist devotional beings such as Avalokitesvara and White Tara, this book is *not* an academic exploration of questions of comparative religion or socio-anthropology, so if you seek that, this is not your book.

Meeting Kuan Yin

This is a wonderful book. It's become my favorite "bedtime stories" book. What I especially like is that the engrossing tales of personal experiences with Kuan Yin (as well as some with Tara) create for readers our own "virtual" experience of a Bodhisattva being as a reality; I feel I'm actually meeting Her, and I fall asleep in a very pleasant mood. I love many Buddhist books, but "Bodhisattva of Compassion: The Mystical Tradition of Kuan Yin" is certainly one of the most absorbing and intimate. It's often whimsical and sometimes funny. At the same time there is a lot of new knowledge to be gained here, especially for people in the West who may not be so familiar with details of who Kuan Yin is and how she is regarded in the East. Also, there is wisdom, and good discussions of universal Buddhist concepts.
